Jim was born on the 2nd of June 1933, in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Col. Virgil S. Adkins and Nona Sharp Adkins.
He attended the University of Texas (Class of 1955) on a Naval ROTC scholarship and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After graduation, he was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps where he served for three years. Jim graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 1962. He served his internship at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. After completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor, Jim began his private practice at Memorial Southwest Hospital. He served the hospital as Chief of Staff in 1976 and Chief of the Ob/Gyn section from 1974 to 1975. He retired from private practice after 33 years and then served as Chief of Gynecology at DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center until 2012. He was a member of the Harris County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. He was also active in the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club and the Fayetteville Men’s Coffee Group.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Col. Virgil S. Adkins, Jr. and Henry Leigh Adkins, M.D., and brother-in-law, John W. Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Linda Swan Adkins and sister, Margaret Adkins Campbell; as well as sons, Marshall Adkins (Kim) and their children, Grant, Danny and Jimmy; and Leigh Adkins (Kathryn) and their children, Will and Mary Kate. In addition, he is survived by Kyle Swan (Rachel) and their children, Michael, Benjamin, and Adam; and Stephen Swan (Cecile) and his children, Spencer, Graham and Shepherd. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Jean Adkins and Judy Adkins and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank our dear friend Beverly Reed for the loving care she provided Dr. Adkins in his last days.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Thursday, May 24th, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, May 25th, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, with The Rev. Dr. Tim Van Duivendyk officiating. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
Prior to the memorial service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
