James Bishop Jr., 80, of Missouri City, Texas, passed away on March 9, 2026. Born in Madison, Georgia, to the late James and Mildred Bishop, James was a man defined by a rigorous work ethic and a lifelong demand for excellence.
James’ professional life was a testament to his high standards. His early career in the kitchen led him to become the Head Chef for the Intercontinental Hotel, a role that brought his family from Atlanta to Houston in 1971. He later transitioned into a career as a mechanic, dedicating over thirty years to the trade until his retirement from Volkswagen of America in 2014. This was a fitting final chapter for a man who had an affinity for owning and working on VW Beetles and vans.
Even in retirement, James was a man of constant motion. He operated his own landscaping business. Whether he was manicuring a lawn, restoring an engine, or recreating the homemade Brunswick stew of his Georgia roots, James had no patience for a job half-done. He took pride in his self-sufficiency.
James is preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred Bishop; his siblings: Tyrone Bishop, Godwin Bishop, Cynthia Bishop, Wayne Bishop, Eugene Bishop, Sam Bishop, Beverly Blackshear, and grandson Christopher Bishop.
James is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Elaine Bishop; his children: Yolanda Herring, Claudia Ward, Tracy Bishop, Cedric (Stella) Bishop, Brandon (Tamara) Bishop, and Brian Bishop; his siblings: Waddell (Theresa) Bishop, Leo (Phonda) Bishop, Shelia Bishop, Lalage Bishop, and Pamela (Donald) Huff; as well as fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
