Mr. James "Jim" Coffeen, passed away last night in Houston. He was 102 years old, lived alone in the residence for the past 10 years, almost never saw a doctor (except 40 years ago when his leg was amputated, successfully removing all traces of a cancer), and took no medications!
Jim had a very full life, born in Indianapolis in 1917, moving around the country during the serious unemployment days of the Great Depression, going to college in Texas. It was there in Denton where he met his wife, forming a successful marriage of 70 years.
Jim became a petroleum geophysicist, moving around frequently, eventually working worldwide, circling the globe several times, writing books on the subject. As a teenager he became captivated by the newly-introduced Buck Rogers character, and the limitless ideas of space travel.
Over the years he read all the science fiction he could find, wrote numbers of books, short stories, and poems on the subject (some published, many not). He was still writing on his Mac at age 102!
