November 10, 1949 – October 14, 2026
James Edward Gilliam, 76, of Houston, Texas, passed away on October 14, 2026, at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.
James was born on November 10, 1949, to Norma and Wilbur Gilliam of Waxahachie, Texas. He graduated with honors from The University of Texas in 1973 and went on to build a distinguished career as a structural engineer, working on manufacturing projects throughout the United States. He retired from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2022, when he and his wife returned to Houston to be closer to family.
James was the strong, silent type, a man whose quiet presence spoke volumes. A thoughtful and capable engineer, he brought intelligence and a practical approach to both his work and his life. Beneath his reserved exterior was a dry, sarcastic sense of humor that those who knew him well came to appreciate. His wit, often delivered with a straight face, was a distinctive part of his personality and a quality his family and friends will remember fondly.
Above all, James was a devoted husband and father. He spent countless hours helping his children with homework and coached several of the sports teams in which they participated. He gave his time generously, supporting his children both in the classroom and on the field. James and Mary also enjoyed working in the yard together and watching Alabama and University of Texas football. These memories reflect the steady presence and commitment he brought to his role as a husband and father.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Gilliam; his children, Mark Gilliam and wife Nicole, Susan Eassa and husband Hesham, and Glynda McIver and husband Ryan; and his four granddaughters, Alana, Grace, Emma, and Avery.
James's life was marked by dedication to his profession and, most importantly, to the family he loved. Though he was never one to make a fuss, his steady presence, quiet strength, and unmistakable sense of humor left a lasting impression on those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Bayou City Fellowship in Cypress, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association in James's memory.
