James Lewis

February 21, 1936December 1, 2019

James Everett (Pops) Lewis, 83, of Cypress passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2019. A service to celebrate James' life will take place at 10:30 am on Saturday, December 7th at Brookside Funeral Home and Memorial Park.

James was born on February 21, 1936 in Cibolo, Texas, to parents Harvey and Ruby Lewis. He graduated from Jefferson Davis High School class of 1954 and was fundamental in organizing his class reunions. James attended Sam Houston State University, followed by service in the military, stationed in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was most proud to have married the love of his life, Helen Harper Lewis. Despite her lamenting that she married an avid deer hunter in the month of November, they were happily married for 50 years. James was active in the Lion's Club, athletic booster clubs, and in his neighborhood civic organization. He could be found playing poker on Tuesday nights with his group of longtime friends, and was known to enjoy the slot machines in Louisiana. He was fond of sweets, and will be remembered for his love of fig preserves, may-haw jelly and M&M's. He honestly never met a stranger, and had a true zest for life. He enjoyed being around people, hearing and telling funny stories.

His legacy will continue in his two children, daughter Dannette Lewis-Ross of Brenham, Texas and son Jimmy Lewis of Sour Lake, Texas. James took extreme pride in his two grandchildren, Jack Mitchell Lewis (17) and Sydney Kate Ross (16). Above all else, he adored time with his family. Many weekends would find him in a deer blind or riding on a Ranger. Anything outdoors made him happy. He loved watching his grandson, Jack, play sports, attending as many games as he could. He treasured attending his granddaughter Sydney's plays and recitals, often bragging about how well she could sing.

James showed us what we could be, how we could give, and how to live life well. He will be remembered by his children and grandchildren as an inspiration, guiding his family to lead lives as joy-filled and giving as his. He made a difference in the lives of many, and was beloved by more people than he knew. James was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Helen. He Is survived by his children, Dannette LewisRoss, Jimmy Lewis and wife Eileen. Also Roger Ross, grandchildren Jack Lewis and Sydney Ross, brother HC Lewis, sister Hilda Hafer and husband Ron.

We love you and will miss you terribly, until we meet again.
