A veteran of the US Army, Jim retired as a USPS postal carrier from the T. W. House substation earlier this year. He is lovingly remembered as big brother and confidant by Leslie (Joe) & Patricia Smiers of Buda, Tx, Larry & Karen Smiers, Cypress, Tx, and Tom Smiers, Onalaska, Tx. A life-long bachelor, Jim reveled in the attention given to and received from his many nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews over the years.
While awaiting a lung transplant due to pulmonary fibrosis and after the transplantation in August 2012, Jim kept in touch with co-workers, family, and friends, both near and far. He was always happy to talk on the phone or have visitors, as long as there wasn’t a game on; any game! The highlight of his fall seasons was attending a UT home game with Joe, Larry and friends. The last game he was able to attend in 2011 was a UT win, of course!
Jim requested to be cremated and will later be honored with a final resting place at Houston National Cemetery. He will be missed and remembered by many.
