James Richard Steeg, Jr.

July 7, 1946April 5, 2014

James R. “Tex” Steeg passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 5, 2014, after a long struggle with heart disease and related complications. He spent his last days in Houston with his family. He was born in West Hempstead, New York on July 7, 1946, to James and Georgiana Steeg. His family moved to Houston in 1961 and Tex remained a Texas resident thereafter. Tex attended The University of Texas at Austin and he graduated with a BBA in 1970 and a MBA in 1976. After completing his education, Tex worked in the banking industry, spending most of his banking career with Texas Commerce Bank in Austin. After banking, Tex worked as a real estate agent and then mortgage broker in Austin.

Tex met his wife, Kay Clark, when he was 16 years old in Houston, Texas. They were married in 1968 for 26 years, and though later divorced, they remained in each other’s lives until she passed away in 2009.

Tex was most passionate about his family, friends, and faith. His greatest joys were being with those he loved and giving his time for others. He was a parishioner of St. John Neumann for almost 30 years, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteered with Mobile Loaves and Fishes. He also volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister at Seton Medical Center in Austin, bringing the sacrament to patients. Earlier in his life, Tex also volunteered with the Sunshine Camp for Children.

Tex was predeceased by his wife, Kay, parents James and Georgiana, and sister, Nancy Steeg. His memory will be cherished by his family: son Brian Steeg, son Kenley Steeg and daughter-in-law Jennifer Steeg, grandchildren Andrew and Sarah Steeg, sisters Sherry Boni, Barbara Benson, Chris Scrip, and Suzy Lyles-Godwin, and brother Jack Steeg. Tex will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on April 12, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. John Neumann, 5455 Bee Cave Road in Austin, TX.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Mobile Loaves and Fishes (, St. John Neumann, Austin, Texas (mailing address above), or Seton Medical Center Austin Volunteer Services (1201 West 38th Street, Austin, TX 78705).

I loved Tex. I saw him a few years ago after many years & he seemed at peace with his illness. I know he is with God & looking upon us wishing for us to join him in Heaven. I am sorry that I missed his service but will pray for him. He will be praying for us. God is good.

We will remember Tex as we miss him. With an ever present smile and good humor he was fun to be with. We will raise a toast to Tex at the 50th reunion of Memorial High School class of 1964.

So sorry to hear about this, Tex was a true professional and fellow Realtor here in Austin who anybody was happy to be on the other side of a transaction with. Just a class guy and professional to the core. He will be missed! My condolences to all of his kids, you can be proud of your Dad.
