Jamie Tabler Shupe was granted her heavenly angel wings on April 7, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. She was the kindest and most wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend of everyone she met.
Jamie was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 3, 1946. She was raised in St. Louis and Kirkwood, MO, and graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1964. She attended Central Methodist College and graduated in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in English (because she loved to read). She met the love of her life, David, just over 50 years ago at the wedding of her co-workers. Jamie and David were married in St. Louis on April 27, 1974.
Together with David, Jamie raised three daughters, Stacy, Abby, and Lindsay. She was active in their schools as a room-mother and volunteer with PTO, and helped with activities such as swim team, choir, and Girl Scouts. She was a best friend and inspiration to each of her daughters. She shared with them her love of cooking, sewing, reading, and serving others, and taught them kindness, generosity, and the meaning of love.
Jamie was a lifelong educator. She began her teaching career in St. Louis at the State Hospital teaching students with special needs. She resigned from that position in 1980 to become a full-time mother and teacher to her children. She later taught pre-school at Apple Tree Preschool in Spring, TX, and then taught special education at Escamilla Intermediate School in Aldine for 10 years before retiring in 2006.
Jamie was a member of Northwoods Presbyterian Church, where she served on various committees over the years. She was actively involved in the mission work of the church and was an early member of Quilters of the Heart, a quilt group based at Northwoods which made quilts for Northwest Assistance Ministries as well as various other organizations when needed.
Jamie was the embodiment of the phrase, “she never met a stranger.” She didn’t have acquaintances - all who knew her were friends. Her care for others was evident in everything she did. Jamie was a giver – a giver of her time, her talents (quilting and cooking being at the top of the list), and most especially a giver of love. She was free with her laughter and her smile lit many a room. She brought people together, fed them, and literally blanketed them with her love.
She is survived by her husband David, daughters Stacy Steketee (Mark), Abby Allen (Patrick), and Lindsay Shupe (Gabe Garza), grandchildren Miriam and Elliott Steketee, sister Gail Lambright (Steve), and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mom’s memorial service will be held on Friday, May 6th at 2 pm at Northwoods Presbyterian Church, 3320 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX, 77068 (it’s on 1960 at TC Jester).
Memorial contributions may be made to Northwoods.
