Jane Anderson Morcom Barfield, age 85, was a native Houstonian born in the Norhill neighborhood or the historical Houston Heights area on the 14th of October 1925. She died peacefully after a very brief illness on the 8th of October 2011, just 6 days shy of her 86th birthday, in the hospice unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital, in Houston. She was born the only child of Russell A. ("Nig'') and Lola Schreiber Anderson. Her dad was a well known golfer and baseball/softball player and coach in the Houston area. Her mother was active and held offices in the Catholic Daughters organization here in Houston.
Jane graduated from Houston's John H. Reagan High School in the class of 1942 where she was a Reagan Bulldog cheerleader and voted Most Popular her senior year. She was popular and beautiful all her life with a desire to 'give back' by volunteering with the Yellow Ladles of Jeff Davis Hospital, continuing with the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, St. Anthony Catholic Center and many others. Her proudest contribution was organizing the first Celebrity Fashion Show Benefit for the Women's Christian Home to aid battered and homeless women.
Jane's joy was her family and she called them regularly to remind them that she wanted them all happy and healthy and safe (which, thankfully, they remain). She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of almost 51 years, W. Lowry Barfield, Jr. Lowry was an executive with the Gordon Jewelry Corporation where he served as Vice Chairman of the Board for many years. Others include her daughter, Kandie Morcom Cook of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Barfield and Tim Bauer of Atlanta; and son and daughter-in-law, W. Lowry Barfield, III and wife Jo-Anne Coslett Barfield of EI Paso. Grandchildren, include Kameron Cook and husband Kevin Bratt of Chicago, Connor Anderson Cook and fiancé, Melissa Millin of Houston, Lesley Bauer, Joe Bauer, Andy Bauer, Gillian Barfield and Tyler Barfield. Great grandchildren include, Jens Bratt and Owen Bratt. Jane also leaves her sisters-and-brothers-in law, Virginia and Don Perkins of Houston and William and Diane Barfield of Clinton, Mississippi.
The memorial service is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 13th of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Dr. Kelly Williams, Pastor Emeritus of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Pavilion.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that donations in Jane's memory be directed to The Women's Home, 607 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX, 77006, www.thewomenshome.org.
