Jane Taner Harris
February 16, 1958 – November 1, 2019
Jane Kismet Taner Harris passed away Friday, November 1, 2019 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas at the age of 61. A memorial service will be held at Emerson Unitarian Church, 1900 Bering Dr. on Sunday, December 22nd at 3:00 pm.
Jane was born on February 16, 1958, in St. Paul, Minnesota to Anne Yvonne and Turhan “Tury” Taner. Shortly after, in 1962, her family moved to Houston. Jane attended The University of Texas at Austin, studying Nutrition, which she put to use in her own catering company and then, later, as the Director of Catering at The University of Texas at Dallas. During her time in Dallas she used her culinary knowledge to start an artisan dog biscuit business. Jane lived a multifaceted life with varied interests. She was an avid artist, entering many art shows and was her most relaxed when drawing or painting with watercolors. Like her father, she enjoyed travel and had lived with her husband and son overseas in The Netherlands, Scotland, and Malaysia. Jane had an infectious, positive spirit and actively sought out interesting people and good conversation. She made friends easily and treasured the friendships she had around the world. Hospitality was second nature to Jane. She enjoyed cooking with her family, entertaining friends, and sharing good food and drink. She had a thirst for learning and for sharing her knowledge with others. She valued her numerous friendships with those in the hospitality industry and respected their creativity, energy, and passion for their chosen crafts. Generous with her time, she always looked for ways to give back to her community or make a situation better. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA President, a volunteer with various charitable organizations, and an active member of the USBG.
Jane is survived by her loving family, including her husband Christopher Harris; son Adam Harris; brothers Jeffrey Taner and wife Andrea and John Taner and wife Julie; aunt Turcan Sozeri; cousins Selen Sozeri, Beren Argun and her husband Emir, Devin Ozel, David Hoffmann and wife Cathy, Linda Hoffmann, and Rick Hoffmann and wife Allison; in-laws; nieces and nephews; and a host of cherished friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in honor of Jane Harris be made to The American Heart Association at www.heart.org or by calling 1-800-242-8721.
