Joan Slater Akin

Joan Philbeck Slater Akin, 91, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2026. She was born on March 31, 1935, in Portland, Oregon, to Lawrence and Mary Wassinger.

For more than thirty years, Joan was an Executive Secretary at the Dental Science Institute of Texas, where she was valued for her dedication and steady presence. Outside of work, she filled her life with the things she loved: golf, travel, and dancing. She stayed active well into her nineties, still heading to the gym with the same determination she brought to everything else. Sundays were special to Joan. She spent them at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, where she found fellowship and joy in attending Bible study.

Joan will be remembered for her warmth, her quiet strength, and her devotion to her family. She leaves behind her daughters, Debby P. Quigley and Joanne Slater; her stepson, Mike Akin; her grandson, Michael Thacker; and many dear friends who were touched by her kindness.

A memorial service will be held on October 30, 2026, at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. The family is deeply grateful for the love, kindness, and support they have received during this time.
