Joan was born on June 3, 1932 in New Orleans, Louisiana. An avid writer from the start, Joan wrote letters to her family and soldiers during World War II and continued this trend throughout her life. Stationary was always a welcome gift as she kept up with her many relatives and neighbors regularly. Funny comics, newspaper clippings she thought you might enjoy, and recipes were some of her favorite things to mail. She also couldn’t get enough of the crossword section of the newspaper.
To her friends and neighbors Joan was energetic, faithful, gracious, an amazing seamstress, and even better cook. She showed her love through her food and was always singing some song while cooking in the kitchen. She had a beautiful singing voice – one that will be remembered.
Joan is predeceased in death by her husband, Philip, her parents Julius and Ruth Gastrock, and brother George. She is survived by her two daughters Phyllis Knesek (Ron) and Becky Freeman (Randall), 4 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Reserve at Katy Assisted Living and Memory Care for the extraordinary amount of compassion and grace they showed our Joan.
A celebration of Joan’s life will take place at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Houston, TX on January 20, 2024 at 10 AM. Reverend Sharron Cox will be officiating this service as she did at Philip’s. Burial will take place at a later time at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, LA. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity.
