

Growing up in Houston, she attended River Oaks Elementary, the Kinkaid School, graduated from the Madiera School, and Pine Manor Junior College.
In 1950, she married Joe Cullinan and together they had four children. In 1959, she married Darrell LeRoy Hazelhurst.
Joan earned her private pilot’s license and was an instrumental partner in Hazelhurst Aviation at Andrau Airpark until the company sold in 1973. She moved to Kerrville, Texas, and lived on the Meadowcreek Ranch on Lower Turtle Creek Road, where they entertained family, friends and neighbors.
After the ranch sold in 1983, she built a house in Riverhill. Joan enjoyed quail hunting, fishing, sailing, tennis, traveling, and belonging to the Day Trippers. Activities and holidays were especially important to Joan.
In 2006, she returned to Houston and lived at the Buckingham. She was a sustaining member of The Junior League of Houston, a former member of the River Oaks Garden Club, served on the NAMI board in Kerrville, and a member and former volunteer at the Church of St. John the Divine.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Lucile Lister Potter and Hugh Morris Potter; two half-brothers, Hugh Potter, Jr. and William Scott Potter; husband, Roy Hazelhurst; and son-in-law, David Holland.
Survivors include her children, Kathleen Bywaters (Ban), Carolyn Cullinan, Laura Holland, and Steve Cullinan (Andie); grandchildren, Natalie Lee (Brian), Branson Bywaters, Kristen Smith, Marion Varone (Jacques), Stevie Cullinan (Louisa), Ryan Kelley (Hunter), and Shelby Cullinan; great-grandchildren, Preston Lee and Emma Lee; stepdaughter, Darrellyn Burts (Don); step grandchildren, Donnie Burts (Jennifer) and Maggie Justus (Charlie); step great-grandchildren, Gregory Burts (Stephanie), Madeline and Noah Justus; also included are eight wonderful nieces.
The family thanks the Dream Care team and Vantage Hospice for their love and support for Joan.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from four o’clock in the afternoon until six o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 2nd of December, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A memorial service is to be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 3rd of December, at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Richnow and Rev. Dr. Leigh Spruill will officiate.
Immediately following the service, guests are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent Sumners Hall.
Prior to the service, the family will gather for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Joan’s honor be directed to The Junior League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane, Houston, Texas 77027; or to the charity of one’s choice.
