Joan May Johnson

February 6, 1932June 21, 2020

Joan M. Johnson, 88, of Houston, passed into the loving arms of our Lord on Sunday June 21, 2020. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. Johnson, with whom she celebrated 46 years of marriage before his passing in 1999. She was a devoted, loving mother to five children; son Gregory (deceased 2018) and wife Kathy, daughter Theresa Shannon and husband Randy, daughter Suzanne Nesmith and husband Doug, son Jeffrey R. and wife Sonia, and daughter Nanette Yeager and husband Mark. A dozen grandchildren were blessed to call her Mawie/Wowo/Mimi; Matthew Nesmith and wife Chelsea, Kristin Canton and husband Casey, Timothy Nesmith and wife Brandi, Brent Gressett and wife Michelle, Amy Best and husband Travis, Sarah Yamagami and husband Daisuke, Heather Naboshek and husband Ryan, Rebecca Johnson (deceased 2009), Haley Yeager, Stephen Johnson, Sam Yeager, and Caroline Yeager. Her legacy continues as great-grandmother to 10 children and counting. Joan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 6, 1932. She was the youngest of seven children born to Peter and Theresa Miller and is preceded in death by her siblings; Mary Honnert, William Miller, Rita Hammar, Margaret Miller, Frances Miller, and James Miller. Joan received a degree in nursing and married the love of her life, Bob, in 1952. She was passionate about her career as an RN and loved helping others. After a long and rewarding career, she retired from Houston Northwest Medical Center. Her innate love of travel and adventure led her to see much of the world with Bob by her side. Even after his passing, her adventurous spirit saw her riding elephants in Thailand, on an African safari, and enjoying countless cruises. After she could no longer travel, she continued to stay very active and enjoyed many social activities with both neighborhood and church friends including 55 Plus, Garden Club, Book Club, and Serra Club. Many days you would find her in her blue chair with a rosary in hand; her abundant faith strengthened her and gave her peace and comfort. And she has passed that gift on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held at Brookside Champions Funeral Home at 3410 Cypress Creek Parkway in Houston on July 2nd at 8:30am until 9:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11am at Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Community, located at 18511 Klein Church Road in Spring, Texas. Graveside service will be at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery following the Mass. Due to COVID-19, masks will be required and social distancing will be upheld at these celebrations of her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Retirement Fund for Religious (http://www.shareinthecare.org/donate-to-share-in-the-care) or Donate Life America (https://www.donatelife.net/give-to-dla/).

It was a distinct honor and pleasure for us to have known and loved Joan and her family for nearly fifty years. We shared 3 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Joan was a child of God who will be remembered for her devotion to God and family. May God shed his light on all those who she left behind. Se loved you all.
