Joan Bagby Lane died on Friday, the 11th of August 2017, after a long illness. She was born on the 8th of February 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, the oldest daughter of Julian and Marjorie Bagby. Joan graduated from the University of Kansas in 1950, having previously attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia; and she moved to Houston when following college friends to the growing city of Houston. In 1952 Joan met and married her husband of 57 years, George H. Lane, M.D.; and after a two-year medical internship in Virginia, George and Joan returned to Houston to establish George’s private practice in orthopedics and their family. Joan adored her husband and fully supported his medical career while making long lasting friendships in Houston for herself and George. She and George were members of The Forest Club, The Briar Club, and The Dancers Club--all in Houston. Joan made many friends through her early volunteer work and membership at the Junior League of Houston. Two of her most cherished lifetime affiliations were her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and her church, St. John the Divine in both of which she was active and supported throughout her life.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, George Lane, and leaves her four sons: George III and his fiancé Gretchen Simmen, Ross, Tom, John, and John’s wife Carran Lane; and she leaves her 5 grandchildren, all her pride and joy: Nancy Katherine Allen, John Bennett Lane, Jr., Claire Babgy Lane, George Henry Lane IV, Audrey Ann Lane, and one great-granddaughter, Anna Ebersole Allen. She is also survived by her sisters Susan Biggar of Kansas City, Missouri, and Linda Wasson of Hawaii as well as by several nieces and nephews.
We are honored to request each of her grandchildren and great-grandchild to serve as her honorary pallbearers. Of Joan’s many accomplishments in life, being “Mimi” was her greatest joy, which is echoed by all five of her adoring grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by many of her oldest friends whom she missed so much in her final years. To Alice, Carolyn, Odette, and the rest of the Lake house gals: go look her up and get the party started.
The memorial service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 18th of August, in the Chapel of The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Douglas Richnow, Senior Associate Rector, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the Church Parlor.
The family will gather at a later date for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of the customary remembrances, memorial contributions in memory of Joan may be directed toward The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Blvd., Houston, TX 77019.
