

After graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School, where she was voted the most popular girl of her senior class, She went to Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri where she earned a B.A. Degree in Spanish and French and later a Master’s Degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University.
Joan returned to Houston upon graduation and was employed by HISD. She retired from HISD’s Los Americas School in 2012. While in college Joan embraced the Catholic faith. She attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church until her death. To further enhance and strengthen her knowledge of Catholicism, she joined the RICA classes at Sacred Heart Co Cathedral.
She leaves to cherish her memory, 3 sisters, Jewel Brooks, Annette Mitchell (Loveless) and Earline Marshall; 2 nephews, Audwin Brooks (Cassandra) and Justin Mitchell, a host of family, friends, and Dylan the family pet of 10 years. Joan was an avid gardener, reader, and a great cook. She will be missed dearly.
On Friday, October 31, 2014 at 2pm a graveside service will be held at Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery with Father Lawrence Jozwiak officiating.
