Joan spent her life in the Houston community. She graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1950 where she was a cheerleader at St. Thomas High School, their sister school, and a member of the glee club. During grammar school, she met the love of her life, Melvin “Buddy” Thoede. Joan and Melvin were married on October 22, 1950. During their 71 years of marriage, Joan and Melvin raised ten children and successfully opened a location of Thoede Auto Supply. After retiring, Joan enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially at their property in Ingram, Texas. She was a very active member of her home church, St. Ambrose Catholic Church and participated in many groups and committees while she was a member. She loved to paint, quilt, embroider, and knit. Her works of art are still found in the homes of her children and grandchildren.
Her friends and family know that everyone she knew was considered one of her children. She cared for everyone and was there to help. She loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart but was not afraid to let them know when they stepped out of line.
