Joann Anderson

JoAnn Anderson entered this life on October 17, 1957, to the late Joe D. Anderson and Weddie Salone Anderson. She was known to many as “Jodie”. She grew up on the Northside of Houston, Texas which in the 1960’s was a predominantly white area. JoAnn’s father Joe D. Anderson fought the Houston Independent School District for her to attend a segregated school James Bowie Elementary which was in her neighborhood. In September 1960 Joe D. Anderson request was granted by HISD and JoAnn became the first black child to attend James Bowie Elementary. She went on to attend Key Middle School and Graduated from Sam Houston High School.

JoAnn met Donald Ray Blunt at Sam Houston High School and wedded, from this union came Daniel Anderson and Priscilla Blunt. She was a devoted wife and mother who always went above and beyond. In the early 1990’s she rededicated her life to God and joined her mother’s church Northside Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. Cleothus Montgomery. She was a faithful member who served on the usher board for more than 10 years.

JoAnn was an extraordinarily strong and independent woman who worked two jobs most of her life. Her most recent jobs were Macy’s and Houston Independent School District as a crossing guard. JoAnn was a funny, loving, and peaceful woman who made plenty of friends throughout her life journey.

Her favorite hobbies were watching Young and the Restless, attending comedy shows and Tyler Perry plays. JoAnn gained a passion for traveling with her daughter. She also believed in keeping a well-maintained yard in which she learned her gardening skills from her father who owned his own landscaping company. Jodie would not allow any parking on her well-maintained grass.

JoAnn gained her wings on July 28,2023. She precedes in death her parents, Joe D. Anderson, and Weddie Salone Anderson (1) brother Joel Anderson (1) sister Pauline Kelly Astell. Left to Cherish her memories (1) brother Hans C. Anderson (2) children Daniel Anderson and Priscilla Blunt, and a host of family and friends.
