

He attended Christ The King Elementary and St. Thomas High School, Class of ’48. He was in the grocery business all his life, first delivering circulars, then delivering groceries. He was drafted to the U.S. Army in 1951, assigned to Battalion Food Supply and sent to Korea as Sergeant. After Korea, he attended the National School of Meat Cutting and was a butcher. With his parents, he owned and operated K&K Food Market in The Heights for 62 years. He was a longtime member, Treasurer and President of the Retail Grocers Association of Houston, a member of the Executive Hunting Club, Salt Grass Trail Wagon Five “Circle S,” Knights of Columbus Council 2917, Lay Associates of the Incarnate Word Convent and YMCA “Silver Sneakers.”
He was preceded in death by his parents and son Douglas Kowis. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Ann Martin Kowis, son Kenneth Kowis, daughter Lanette Kowis, daughter-in-law Lucy Kowis, grandson Jeremy Kowis and wife Leanne, great granddaughter Libby Kowis and brother Jimmy Kowis.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 8, 2015 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Rosary at 6:30 PM in The Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 9, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3601 Milam Street, Houston, Texas 77002. Interment will follow in The Garden of Gethsemani at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023.
