Joe Anderson Rivers Jr.

Joseph “Joe” Anderson Rivers Jr., age 94, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026 in Houston, TX, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Joe was born on May 7, 1932, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended St. Patrick Catholic School before earning a full basketball scholarship to The University of Corpus Christi, where he graduated with a degree in History. His college years were interrupted by his service in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Following his military service, Joe began a career that would span more than four decades in the bowling industry. As the manager and owner of multiple bowling alleys serving the Corpus Christi and San Antonio areas, he faithfully dedicated 45 years to a profession he truly enjoyed. Never one to slow down, he later worked with Workforce Development in Alice and Robstown, continuing to serve his community until retiring at the age of 80.

A man of deep faith, Joe was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Odem, where he faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life and was reflected in the kindness, generosity, and compassion he shared with others.

Joe’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was blessed with six children who brought him tremendous pride and happiness. Joe was first married to Billie Buchanek, and together they welcomed Robyn and Michael. In 1968, Joe married, Penny, and together they built a loving home in Portland, Texas, filled with family, laughter, and cherished memories. Through their life together, Joe welcomed Linda Pruitt, Loree DuBose, and Milton Watson as his children, and he loved them as his own. In 1976, Joe and Penny were blessed by the birth of their son, Ryan Rivers. They eventually moved and settled in Odem, Texas.

Joe cherished his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He found great happiness in the time he spent with his nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, and he was incredibly proud of the family he built. His greatest legacy was the love he gave and the memories he created with those closest to him.

Joe is survived by his six children, Linda Pruitt (Jay), Loree DuBose, Robyn Rivers, Milton Watson (Penny), Michael Rivers, and Ryan Rivers; his sister, Catherine Pennington; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Celia Rivers; his brothers, Hank, Alec, and Pat; his beloved wife, Penny; and his son-in-law, Leland DuBose.

Those who knew Joe will remember his playful spirit as much as his unwavering love for his family. He loved pulling harmless pranks, telling stories, and finding ways to make those around him laugh. Whether it was a well-timed joke, a mischievous moment, or a memory created around the family table, Joe had a special gift for bringing joy to others. His kindness, quick wit, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Joe’s legacy is one of faith, family, hard work, laughter, and unconditional love. He taught those around him the importance of enjoying life, cherishing family, and finding joy in everyday moments. Though he will be deeply missed, his stories, his humor, and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Odem, Texas, on Saturday, August 15th, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

The family invites all who knew and loved Joe to join them in celebrating a life well lived—a life filled with faith, family, laughter, and love.
