He graduated from the American High School in Mexico City, Mexico. Jay began his radio career in Mexico City in 1957. He worked at XEL (for the experience) until he was hired by KRIO in McAllen, Texas, where he remained for 11 years, the last six years as Program Director. Jay was nominated for DJ of the year (small market) at the 1971 Gavin Convention in New Orleans, then received many offers from the exposure at the convention. He accepted an offer from KILT, in Houston in December 1971, and stayed with KILT through August, 1976. After leaving KILT, Jay began his own business operating a commercial recording studio, catering strictly to radio and TV voiceover.
Jay is survived by his wife Nelda Hannes; son, Todd Hannes; daughter, Lori Deleon; granddaughter, Hailey Deleon; sister, Rebecca Valadez; brother, Gary Hannes; mother-in-law, Jean Pech and numerous nieces and nephews. Jay is preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Hannes.
