John Carroll Luck was born in McNeil, Arkansas on May 7, 1926 to John Carroll Luck, Sr. and Marion Kelly Luck. His character was formed at an early age by his strong belief in his Lord Jesus Christ. He graduated from Magnolia High School in 1943. Due to World War II he began working as a roughneck in the oilfield at the age of 15 years and continued in summers, holidays and weekends until his graduation from high school in 1943. He served as a pre aviation cadet and a P.E. instructor at Kessler Field, Mississippi and Scott Field, Illinois until his honorable discharge in 1944. In 1945 and 1946, he was enrolled in school at Magnolia A&M College.
In 1946 he transferred to the University of Oklahoma and received a Bachelor of Science degree in petroleum engineering in 1950. During his stay at O.U. he met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Crisman. They were married October 20, 1950 and began their long lives together in Duncan, Oklahoma where he was employed as a mud engineer for Baroid, an oilfield service company. In 1952 Baroid transferred him to Calgary, Alberta, Canada where he serviced drilling operations in a 60,000 square mile area with an auto and a Cessna 170 airplane. He worked in Canada as a troubleshooter and area engineer until 1957, when he was transferred to New Orleans, Louisiana, as a sales representative. In 1958 he was promoted to district superintendant for Baroid and served in New Orleans, Lafayette and Lake Charles until he resigned from Bariod in 1963.
He then was employed as an offshore drilling engineer for Mobil Oil Company and moved to Morgan City, Louisiana. He worked for Mobil Oil for six years as a drilling engineer, drilling foreman, offshore senior drilling foreman, and finally offshore drilling superintendant in the New Orleans division.
He resigned from Mobil Oil and went to work for the Western Company of North America as district manager of the Houma District. Later in 1969, he resigned from Western Company to form his own engineering consulting company called Petroleum Consultants International. In 1970, the company was renamed Petroleum Consultants Universal (“PCU”), a worldwide consulting company doing business in southeast Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle East. A job in the Gulf of Suez for a client, Superior Oil Company required all of the personnel of PCU and when that job was completed, PCU was terminated. In 1986, Luck Petroleum Corporation was formed and drilled many wells under that name. He retired and closed Luck Petroleum Corporation in 1989, when the price of oil went to $9 per barrel. Since 1989 he lived in retirement in Houston, surrounded by a loving family and good friends, blessed by the Lord.
