John Oprean, 82, passed away on October 11, 2026. He was born on June 17, 1944, in Poplaca, a small village outside Sibiu, Romania, to Petru and Ana Oprean. His father was a respected veterinarian known throughout the community, and his example encouraged John to take an active interest in the world beyond their village.
John graduated valedictorian of his high school class and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and International Trade from the Institute of Economics and International Commerce at the University of Bucuresti. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors, earning a score of 10, a perfect score, on his exit examinations.
Always interested in more than local matters, John joined the Romanian Trade Corps, where he specialized in international trade. He was recognized by his peers for distinguished service and exemplary work in foreign trade and was promoted to Director of International Trade for the Romanian delegation. He worked diligently to strengthen trade and business relationships between Romania and the United States.
John was a loving and supportive husband and father. He was patient and understanding, and he encouraged his children to seek a deeper understanding of the world around them. He always placed family first, making time for visits and gatherings with loved ones both at home and abroad.
In Houston, John was devoted to bringing together the city’s Romanian community. He gave himself body and soul to every step of building the Romanian Orthodox Church of St. Mary Magdalena and its social hall, contributing his work, donations, and advice. He served one year as President of the Parochial Council, and at the church’s 25th anniversary he was awarded an honorary diploma for his dedication and contributions. A bed of perennial flowers he planted around the church still blooms year round.
John loved spending time with family, going to the beach, gardening, and exploring new destinations. He had a true green thumb and could transplant nearly any plant he came across. His passion for learning, for family, and for the world around him left its mark on everyone who knew him.
John is survived by his wife, Corina; his children, Calin and Anca Brandusa (Brenda); his grandchild, Maia Oprean; his brother, Vasile; and his sisters, Stela and Doina.
