

He was born in Haworth Oklahoma on November 10, 1939, to Eugene and Gladys Reynold. Eugene was a truck driver who passed away when John was 8 years old, and Gladys, a housewife who was now a single Mother of three children made the difficult decision to send oldest son Anthony or “Tony” to live with his Uncle Louis and his wife in English Texas while John and younger sister Linda would stay with their mother. During the summertime, Tony would come home and John would go spend his summers in English with Louis.
John enjoyed playing basketball through his high school years, and even though he was only 5’10”, was quite the star player. It’s a little-known fact that John also participated in some of his high school theater productions.
John graduated from Haworth high school in May of 1958 as Valedictorian of his Senior class and went on to attend Oklahoma State University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. During his senior year of high school, he met Freshman Tomi Sue Ives, and they were married in April 1963. They went on to have three children, Robin, Mallory, and Alane. In August of 1963, John joined the Airforce, and after Robin was born, they moved to Arizona for a year while John trained to be a pilot. He was ranked as a captain and then moved his family to California where Mallory was born, and they lived there for the next 5 years. When he was honorably discharged from his military service, he moved the family back to Oklahoma City, where Alane was born. Over the next few years, they would move to several different places for John’s work, before finally settling in Cypress Texas.
John was licensed in 33 states for his job as an Engineer and kept UpToDate with those licensing until 2 years ago.
In 1987, John married Sandra Dickerson Birk, affectionately known as “Red Brid”, combining their two lives and families, adding two more daughters, Brandee and Kenda to the mix.
John was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and served on the “Horsepitality” committee and was an officer for numerous years.
John Servied as a member and Commander of VFW Post 10352 and would often participate in the weekly poker games. He also enjoyed playing pool and sharing a beer, or two, with friends who were old and new.
John, or Dad, or Pops, or Papa John, was a kind and loving man, who wanted to take care of everyone he knew and will be greatly missed by those who loved and remember him.
John is survived by his sister Linda Smiley of Madil Oklahoma, daughters Robin Reynolds of Nobel Oklahoma, Mallory Reynolds of Oklahoma City, Alane Johnson of Friendswood, Texas, Brandee Koenig and husband Sam of Cross Plains Texas, and Kenda Birk of Llano Texas.
And by grandchildren Cassey, Tara, Crystal, and Lynette Mayerfoffer of Oklahoma City, Taylor Johnson of Friendswood Texas, and Spade Koenig of Cross Plains Texas.
As well, as by great grandchildren, Saphira Trahan of Friendswood Texas, Emmalyn Meyer of Oklahoma City, and Lincoln and Miley Jassman of Nobel Oklahoma.
A Celebration of Life will be held at VFW Post 10352, located at 16035 Waverly Dr, Houston, TX 77032, USA. The service is scheduled for February 14, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
