John Sterling Runnels, lovingly known as Sterlin, passed away on October 17, 2024, at the age of 73. Born to Ruth and Sterling Runnels, Sterlin was a lifelong Northsider, growing up off Burress and graduating from Sam Houston High School in 1969. His career began shortly after with the Houston Fire Department, a path he chose to serve his community.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him to businesses like Runnels Tractor Contractor with his father, and later, Classic Detail Enterprises, which included a paint and body shop, used car lot, and more. With Joe Featherstone, he started Maverick Kookers, which continues at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo. In 2002, Sterlin and Cynthia launched Classic Mobile Park, which allowed them freedom to enjoy life's adventures.
Sterlin was a man of many passions. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trail riding, and was a participant in the rodeo cookoff and a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He loved motorcycles, boating, classic cars, and dancing.
Sterlin is survived by his wife, Cynthia Leslie Muzny-Runnels; children, Christopher Sterling Runnels, John Sterling Runnels Jr, Clint Clements and Michael Sehlke; grandchildren, Riley, Sydney, and Macy; along with numerous friends who he considered family. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristina Runnels, and his parents Ruth and Sterling Runnels.
A graveside service will be held at Brookside Funeral home at 13747 Eastex Freeway, on 10/23/24, at 2-3pm.
Sterlin Runnels lived a full, vibrant life, always doing things his way, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and joy. He will be profoundly missed but forever remembered through the lives he touched.
