It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Anthony Saenz, age 53, of Houston, Texas, on January 15, 2025. John was born in Houston on March 2, 1971, to Maltilda "Tillie" and Edward Saenz. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, he leaves a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Diana Rodriguez; his sons, John Anthony Saenz Jr. and Christopher Anthony Saenz; his daughters Veronica R. Patino, and Natalie N. Miranda whom he embraced and raised as his own. He also leaves behind his son-in-laws, Adrian Patino, and Sergio Capetillo. Along with his daughter-in-laws, Agnes Lopez, and Victoria Thomas.
Known affectionately as "Popo," he will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Adrian, Nicholas, Matthew, Vanessa, Melanie, Mariah, Savannah, Alexander, Christopher, Jordyn, Xavier, and Delilah, as well as his great-grandchildren, Angel, and Lukas James Patino.
John is further survived by his mother, Matilda; his brother, Edward Saenz (wife Odette Hinojosa); his sister, Eliza Saenz (husband Saturnino Martinez); his beloved nieces and nephews, who lovingly called him "Uncle Anthony"; and numerous extended family members, colleagues, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Saenz, his mother-in-law, Juanita Serrata Rodriguez, and niece, Dehlia Marie Rodriguez.
John’s greatest joy was being a father. He found immense pride in his children and loved watching his sons play youth football and baseball. Family was everything to him, and he thrived in seeing his children share in his love of sports. John was also a beloved coach at Denver Harbor Park, where he had grown up, mentoring young children with wisdom, humor, and care.
In addition to his love for family, John was passionate about grilling and often hosted benefit events to support his community. He was proud of his work at BISN and enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with his colleagues. His unique sense of style—starched clothing and his love for sportswear always made him stand out. John was a dedicated supporter of his hometown sports teams, including the Houston Rockets, Houston Texans, and Houston Astros!
John also embraced the joy of bringing smiles to his grandchildren. Every year, he took immense joy in dressing up as Santa Claus during the holiday season and as the Easter Bunny during springtime, creating magical memories for his beloved grandchildren and family. His playful spirit and love for making others laugh and smile will be remembered fondly by all who experienced his kindness and generosity.
John’s life was a testament to his enormous heart and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. He was a man who found joy in spending time with loved ones and lived life to the fullest. His faith was also an integral part of who he was, having served as an altar server at Resurrection Church and completed his sacraments, demonstrating a strong spiritual foundation.
Although John’s wings were ready, our hearts were not. He fought until the very end, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
