

John L. Shuffield, 94, of Houston, completed his journey here on earth Thursday, March 12, 2020. John L. was born on the E T. Hefner Farm in Liberty Hill, Texas to Louis and Grace (Hefner) Shuffield June 30, 1925. He graduated Liberty Hill High School 1943 and promptly joined up to serve his Country with the Merchant Marines as an A. B. Seaman and was honorably discharged February 12, 1946. He began a successful career as an Engineer/Surveyor with the Port of Houston from which he retired after 40 years. He completed studies earning a certificate for Surveying through correspondence courses.Thereafter continuing a lifelong self education of many different subjects enhancing his career. His love for advancement gave him the opportunity to purchase books and every electronic machine he could manage to get whether used or new - calculators, cameras, adding machines, Ipac, I-pad, cell phones, computers and would spend time reading directions, writing outlines to understand how to use each one efficiently. He was a note taker, list maker and diary keeper. He met the love of his life through his employer for whom she worked for, Ruth Lawrence. They married in 1950 for 59 happy years until her death in 2009. John L. and family attended Irvington Pentecostal Church aka Sanctuary of Houston from 1949 where he served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Sunday School, Deacon and served on the Church Board through four administrations: Rev. Mary Bowen, Rev. C. L. Dees, Rev. J. J. Bourn, Sr. and the current Pastor Rev. J. J. Bourn, Jr. A true gentleman, kind, honest, faithful and loyal, John had a quiet sense of humor, a sparkle in his eye. His love for God showed through his every day living and had a deep abiding faith. Saturday evenings were spent reading his Sunday School Lesson using the Teacher's Manual, pastimes included reading the newspaper daily: The Houston Post and Chronicle, listening to Astros Baseball on the radio until he purchased an I-pad in 2011 to be able to watch the game live. Epic moment was meeting Milo Hamilton who was the same age and was in the same general area as he during the War in 1945. John L. is survived by his sister, Maudie Burress, of Spring, Texas.; three daughters: Ruth Anne (Wayne) Sheffield, Debra Elaine Parker, Lisa Faye (Michael) Long, Missionary to Vanuatu 14 years, and Botswana Africa presently 7 years. Grandchildren: Zaccheaus (Jenn) Long, Datha Long (Orrin) Hargrave, John Sheffield and David (Eva) Sheffield. Great Grandchildren, Chastidy, Logan, Hadassah, Jenevieve, Kielah, Alice, Julianna and Ailani Joy. John L. was preceeded in death by wife, Mary Ruth, brother Billy Charles, and sister Pearl Brannon and son-in-law Barry J. Parker.
Memorial Service will be held at Irvington Pentecostal Church aka Sanctuary of Houston 4400 Fulton Houston, Texas 77009 Sunday March 22, 2020. Public Viewing 3-5 pm, Service 5 pm.
Committal Service will be held at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas 77039, Monday, March 23, 2020 at 11:30. Arrive in parking lot by 11:15 for procession.
