John was born in Hayti, Missouri, to John Henry and Zelma Lee (McGahey) Suddarth. His formative years were defined by farming and family life alongside his four sisters and three brothers, as well as a beloved grandfather down the road whom he joined many mornings for breakfast. His education took him from a one-room schoolhouse to Mississippi State University, where he earned his degree in Agriculture.
John began his career with Swift & Company’s Fertilizer Division, a path that took him from New Orleans to Victoria, and later, Houston. John then took a chance with a start-up, American Plant Food Corporation, and grew alongside the company to become Executive Vice President. John’s love for creating custom fertilizer formulas for various soil types was exceeded only by his genuine passion for agriculture and his dedication to fostering relationships with local farmers. His contributions to the industry were recognized with appreciation by the Texas A&M University’s State Chemist Office in 2003. Extremely devoted to American Plant Food, its people, and its ultimate success, John helped expand the company throughout the United States and overseas, retiring after 39 dedicated years in 2011.
John met the love of his life, Ruth, in Victoria, Texas, and they were wed on October 5, 1974. Together, they built a life of shared happiness—gardening, traveling, serving their church community, and painstakingly renovating a historic home in New Braunfels, Texas. John found immense joy and pride in raising their daughter, adding a wonderful son-in-law; and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren. Throughout his life, John always remained actively involved in farming and stayed inherently curious, continually seeking to learn more about the people he met and their stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, William, Carl, and Nick Suddarth; and his sisters, Hallie Bartliff, Betty Sue Parsons, and Henrietta Hughes. He is survived by his sister, Martha Jane Whitener. In addition to his sister, he is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth; his daughter, Ashley (Allan) Gubbins; and his prized grandchildren, Christian and Helena.
Family and friends are invited to honor his life. A visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home (Katy Freeway). The funeral will occur at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Christ Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow.
John's deep empathy fueled his giving to support needy children and causes close to his heart. In memory of his generous spirit, the family welcomes donations to Breakthrough T1D (type 1 diabetes) and Christ Presbyterian Church.
