As a teenager, Johnny was a Golden Glove Boxer. After completing high school, Johnny joined the Army where he served for four years and served the Air Force Reserve for six years. After leaving the military Johnny worked as a car foreman for the Southern Pacific Rail Road. He married Elvira Campos in Houston, Texas. Johnny was an active member of the American Legion. He also attended South Texas Junior College where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree.
Johnny is preceded in death by father, Juan Escamilla, and brother, Gregory Escamilla.
Johnny is survived by his mother, Ramona Escamilla; wife, Vera Escamilla; daughter, Nancy Escamilla Gardner and husband Loren Gib Gardner; son, John Escamilla Jr. and wife Ellen R. Escamilla; grandchildren: Danielle Escamilla, Chris Blake Delcamp and wife Tina Delcamp, Cara Delcamp, Sean Escamilla and wife Briseida Escamilla, Jacob Anthony Gardner; great-grandson Gabriel Delcamp; brothers: Paul Escamilla, Oscar Escamilla, Ernest Escamilla; sister, Irene E. Shafer, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Johnny will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas 77039. The funeral service will be Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 11:30 AM at Brookside Funeral Home in the Grand Chapel. A burial will follow at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Texas 77038 with a gate time of 1:45 PM.
