Johnny (Ông Hào) Nguyễn Viết Lương, age 81, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2026. He will be remembered forever as a devoted husband, a beloved father, a contemplative grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, a loyal friend, and a faithful servant of God.
Life and Legacy
Born in Quất Lâm, Bùi Chu, Vietnam on October 29, 1944, Ông Hào was the eldest of five children born to Nguyễn Viết Ruong and Nguyễn Thị Thìn. On June 22, 1963, he married his lifelong partner, Tran Thi Suu Mary, in Phước Tỉnh, Vietnam. Together, they built a life centered entirely on faith, resilience, and an unwavering love for their family.
To support his family, Ông Hào worked tirelessly for many years on a fishing boat before later establishing a career and retiring as a skilled welder. He was a man of action and deep generosity—the kind of person who would help you move your entire home or quietly pay for your gas just to ensure you could make the trip to see him.
A Life Devoted to Faith
At the age of 45, after enduring the profound heartbreak of burying three of his children (one in Vietnam and two in Houston). Ông Hào found a deep, transformative relationship with God. He dedicated the rest of his life to Our Lady of La Vang Church. From the days when La Vang was just a small church building, he volunteered his time and effort to help build it into the community it is today.
He wore many hats for the parish, serving in administration, assisting with remodeling projects, working as church security, and as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He spent every weekend giving back, and his presence on the church grounds became a familiar, admired, and comforting staple of the community.
Family First
Ông Hào’s greatest joy was having his family together, no matter the occasion. He cherished his grandchildren deeply and would regularly call his children just to ensure they were bringing the "little ones" over to fill his home with life. In his down time, you could always find him sitting outside on his iPad playing games, quietly enjoying a cigarette, or sipping his favorite combination of cognac and coke from the flask he carried so he would never bother anyone. He made it a beloved tradition to play cards with his children, using the games as a simple way to bond, laugh, and be close to those he loved most.
Surviving Family
He is survived by his loving wife, Tran Thi Suu Mary; his four remaining children, Thi Hong Thuy, Chi Dung, Thi Hoang Yen and Thai Hoang Tina; his 12 grandchildren, Unique Vy, Minh, Josaphine, Lee, Simon, Emma, Ava, Ayden, Angelique, Armani, Heaven, and Christian; his 3 great-grandchildren, Taelyr Hope, Tara’lynh, Oliver, and Iris; and his great-great-grandchild, Jameson.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three of his beloved children, Thi Bach Yen, Chi Hung, and Hung Cuong.
A Note of Gratitude from the Family:
"This has been an incredibly difficult time for our entire family. We want to sincerely thank everyone who has taken the time to offer their support, care, and condolences, as well as all of our extended family who came together to help us through these days. We know he is looking down from above and smiling, seeing just how deeply he was loved by so."
