Dr. Joseph N. Corriere, Jr.

Dr. Joseph N. Corriere, Jr., 89, passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, Texas on the 14th of September 2026. Joe was the beloved husband of Dr. Eileen Brewer Corriere and oldest son of urologist Dr. Joseph N. Corriere, Sr. and nurse anesthetist Rose Ada Ponsetto Corriere. He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania and grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He graduated from The Hill School, then the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in journalism, wrote a column for the Daily Pennsylvanian and was All American and captain of the fencing team. In1963, he received his MD from Seton Hall College of Medicine, New Jersey.

After completing his urology training as resident and chief resident at the University of Pennsylvania, Joe served his country for 2 years as a Major in the US Air Force at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas. He then joined the faculty in Urology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1974, he moved to become the founding Chief of the Division of Urology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He was Professor of Surgery, an authority on urologic trauma and author of numerous scientific journal articles and book chapters. He taught medical students, trained over 100 urology residents and mentored many junior faculty. Joe was known nationally and internationally for his work. He was an invited member of the prestigious American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, and was elected to a six-year term on the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Urology. He was a leader in the American Urological Association (AUA) serving as Director of the Office of Education for many years, president of the South-Central Section and president of the AUA in 2005. He spent the last decade of his career as Professor of Urology and Genitourinary Center Medical Director at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

In retirement, he golfed with friends and endeavored to read as many non-fiction books as possible, both those he had missed while working and all the new ones he could find. He travelled extensively with his wife Eileen, both for medicine/education and for pleasure, setting foot on all seven continents and cruising the Arctic. Joe was a wonderful urologic surgeon, educator, mentor, leader, friend, neighbor, brother, uncle, father, grandfather and husband. His legacy exists in all those he trained to practice and improve urologic medicine and in all the family who loved him.

Joe is predeceased by his parents and brother Donald B. Corriere. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Dr. Eileen Doyle Brewer Corriere; sister Grace Conti; sister-in-law Carol Corriere; sons Joseph III, Christopher (Nancy) and Gregory Corriere; daughter Evelyn Tanner (Jack); grandchildren Emma and Ian Tanner; brothers-in-law Jim (Marjorie), Terry (Susan) and Dr. Timothy Doyle; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 24th of September, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
