Joyce Barbara Batten

Joyce B. Batten; 89 pasted away on Friday April 27, 2018, due to long term illness; Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and pneumonia due to staph infection in her lung. She was born in Houston TX, on April 7, 1929 to Earl and Inga Faulk.

She was raised on the north side of Houston residing at 2409 Firnat Street, in a two-story, two-bedroom home, that did not have running water, electricity or bathroom. Once she was old enough to do chores, two of them she dreaded to do were to clean out the slop bucket (indoor potty) daily and the outhouse once a week, and burn the waste in a burn pile that stunk up the neighborhood. With no electricity she had to do her homework at night by a kerosene lantern. She had to walk to elementary school over shell covered streets that were very dusty and hard to walk on.

She graduated from Jeff Davis High school in 1947, and found a job with Weingarten’s Grocery Stores as a clerk in their main office. She met her husband Homer M. Batten at Beneke United Methodist Church, and where they were married on November 26,1948. She became a full-time housewife after the birth of her son, and caretaker of her invalid mother, father, and mother in-law until their deaths. She lived at 9024 Lomax St, for 63 years, and then moved to Deer Park, close to her son Danny Batten, to a senior care apartment, then to her son's rent house, then to an assisted living apartment, and nursing home, due to not being able to keep up her home, and administer her drugs.

She loved her church family, and church work with the UMW, and food bank. She loved to go to her lake cabin on Horse Shoe Lake, where she learned how to fish, and on one occasion she and her friend Polly flipped out of the flat bottom boat; she could not swim, and was lucky the spot they were fishing was only chest high, where they could stand up and pull the boat to the bank where they turned it back over and went back fishing. She went deer hunting with her husband and son in Buffalo TX, with their friends Polly and Ray Gore that grew up there. She also liked to go on vacations with the Gores, and their Sons, up until their retirement years.

She loved to go visit with her family that lived in San Leon, and Galveston where her mother’s family lived prior to coming to America from Scandinavia.

She is preceded in death by her Mother: Inga Faulk, Father: Earl Faulk, Sister: Leo Faulk Conrad, and Husband Homer Batten.

She is survived by her, Son: Daniel (Danny) Batten, Daughter in-law: Patsy Batten, Grandson: Daniel (Ryan) Batten, and his Wife: Maria Batten, Granddaughter: Brittany Batten Riddle and her Husband: Ryan Riddle, and Great Grandchildren; Audrey Batten, Sophia Batten, Trey Riddle, Drew Riddle, and Grace Riddle.
