Joyce McMillan Evans, 88, of Houston, TX went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 5, 2020. She was born in Vicksburg, MS on May 17, 1932 to Ernest G. and Gladys (Pieplow) McMillan. She and her family remained in Vicksburg and settled in the Yokena area. Joyce and Gordon Evans were married in her family home on February 16, 1951.

Joyce and Gordon moved to Memphis, TN shortly after marrying, and both attended classes at Mid-South Bible College. Their first two sons were born in Memphis. After moving to Chicago, Gordon and Joyce had another son and settled in West Chicago, IL, where they lived for 36 years. They were very active at West Chicago Bible Church. Joyce served as church secretary for many years, along with being involved in Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, choir and more. Joyce and Gordon went on several mission trips after he retired. They loved to travel and mission trips included Sweden and the United Arab Emirates. No matter where Joyce was, she always had a special love for children, and made her home a place of hospitality open to all.

In 1995, Joyce and Gordon retired back to Joyce’s family home in Vicksburg. They joined Immanuel Baptist Church and were involved in the choir and “Keenager” group there. Even late in life Joyce continued to help with vacation bible school and teaching children. They made their way to Houston, TX in 2013.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of over 69 years Gordon (August 7, 2020) and her sister Sandra (Crevitt). She is survived by her sister Mavis (Wilson), of Vicksburg and by her sons: Gordon Jr. (Mike), and wife Denise, of Tucson, AZ; Gilbert (Gil), and wife Gail, of Camdenton, MO; Oscar (Ozzie), and wife Kristin, of Houston. Joyce also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Despite the fact that Joyce will be sorely missed, we rejoice in knowing she is safely in the arms of her savior and reunited with Gordon and so many other family members and friends. No doubt, she’s already made a chicken pot pie and pitchers of tea to gather around.

Services will be held at Forest Park Westheimer in Houston on September 19, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to: Buckner Parkway Place, 1321 Park Bayou Drive, Houston, Texas 77077, who lovingly cared for Joyce. Please note Senior Assistance Fund with your donation-this fund allows loved ones to be cared for regardless of ability to pay.

The funeral will be available to watch live beginning at 10 am on Saturday, September 19th on the Forest Park Westheimer Facebook page. You do not need a Facebook account to access the livestream. Simply google Forest Park Westheimer Facebook, then open to full screen view to watch.

Dear Ozzie, Mike, Gil, and families,
Wishing you all peace and joy as you grieve and celebrate Joyce together. An early Sunday School memory from the mid 1960s is of Mrs Evans expressive voice as she taught flannel board Bible stories at the West Chicago Bible Church. Ozzie has told me that she would practice at home. I’m grateful for those efforts in sharing God’s love and truth with me and many children. I also recall observing and appreciating how very much Joyce and Gordon loved each other. Much sympathy for your difficult goodbyes and recent losses. Fun to picture their many reunions and awe of God’s amazing grace.

Ozzie, Kristin, and family, I am praying for you, and your church loves you! What a legacy Joyce (and Gordon) have left! Thanking Jesus for his faithfulness to them, and their faithfulness to one another through all the years! May God help us live with the same type of commitment to those we love!!

Dear Mike, Gil, and Ozzie and your family.
My deepest condolences on the passing of your mom. We have enjoyed the friendship of your parents and family for many years. Joyce was a faithful friend, always there with her giggle and helpful spirit. Joyce served West Chicago Bible Church in many capacities, including Administrative Secretary, cook, nursery staff, choir, just to name a few. I am praying for your dear family at this time.
