Joyce Hayden Fletcher, 94, died April 12, 2026. Born September 10, 1931, in Danville, Illinois, Joyce carried forward a life marked by steady grace, generous spirit, and an abiding regard for others. A resident of Houston, Texas, she will be remembered with deep respect and lasting affection.
Joyce was the daughter of Arthur and Lorean Hayden and the second oldest of ten children. From the beginning, she understood the meaning of family and responsibility, and throughout her life she met those callings with a compassion that was practical, constant, and quietly selfless. She was the mother of Allyson Cannon Crockett, a role she held with devoted care and a kind-hearted steadiness that shaped the lives around her.
Joyce’s interests reflected both energy and individuality. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing tennis and softball, and even when she preferred the comfort of home, she remained an easy-chair spectator of most sports. She especially enjoyed the Tennis Channel, and she also took pleasure in watching Judge Judy.
Her sense of style was unmistakable. Joyce loved making her own clothes—creating pieces that matched, complemented, and expressed her fashion statements with confidence and originality. That same spirited independence showed in the routines she enjoyed: when she was still able, she could be seen on her daily trip to a Lottery store, driving with a dog hanging out the window on each side. In later years, she continued that tradition with help from her daughter, who brought her Lottery tickets and Scratch Offs three times a week.
Joyce also delighted in the thoughtful challenge of Scrabble and especially enjoyed playing with her son-in-law, David—moments that spoke to her sharp mind, her warmth, and the simple joy she found in time shared.
Joyce Hayden Fletcher will be remembered for the kindness she extended, the care she gave without hesitation, and the quiet strength with which she lived. Her life remains a lasting testament to compassion, to family, and to a spirit that never lost its sense of adventure or its distinctive style.
