Joyce Marian Powell Simms passed away on Wednesday, April 28th, 2021 in Houston, Texas in the care of her loving family. She was born in Catskill, New York on February 12th, 1941 to George Walter Powell and Edna Williams Powell. She spent her childhood in Tannersville, New York where she graduated from Hunter-Tannersville Central School in 1958.

After graduating, she attended the Mildred Elley School in Albany, New York where she picked up her skills in typing and secretarial work. This career path brought her to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by the FBI and met her husband. They had two children together. Eventually, her life would lead her to Texas, She became a Houstonian in 1974. In Houston, she worked for the telephone company for 40 years & finally retired in 2010.

In her later years, she found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a huge reader and would sometimes read 3 novels in a week. A few of her other hobbies included gardening, puzzles, and geocaching. She also loved to collect coins and elephants. She enjoyed classic rock n’ roll music like the Beatles and Elvis. She was a lover of animals, which included her beloved pets Blondie, Kitty, Patches & her grand-doggies, Jewel, Sophie & Wesley.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George Walter Powell & Edna Williams Powell, and nine older brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Covey & her husband, Raynard Covey; her son, Michael Simms; her granddaughter, Sarah Luhring & her husband, Chris Luhring; her granddaughter, Jessica Henderson & her husband, Hugo Chavarria; & her great-granddaughters, Delta Chavarria, Roma Chavarria, & Nora Luhring.
