Joyce “Ding” Pankonien Wehring, 91, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024 in Houston, Texas. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Wehring Rheinboldt and husband Robert, son Ben David Wehring and wife Linda, grandchildren Jason Massie and wife Jessica, Kristine and Bradley Rheinboldt, and great-grandchildren Dylan, Savannah, Tyler and Khloe Massie.
She was born in Mound Hill, Texas in Washington County on February 15, 1933 to Gus and Esther Pankonien, and raised alongside her sister Dorothy and brother Gus Jr. While living in Brenham, Joyce met Ben Wehring, marrying in 1951, and they remained together for 57 years until his passing in 2009. Joyce and Ben settled in Houston to raise their family, living in the Spring Branch area for almost 6 decades. The Wehring household was also home to various animals over the years and a dog named Sunshine was among Joyce’s greatest joys in life.
Joyce filled her home with a lot of love and showed that love through cooking and crafts. She was famous for her fudge pies and strawberry cakes, and was also known for always having Blue Bell homemade ice cream on hand - both for herself and visitors of her home to enjoy. Joyce became a grandma in the 80’s and her adoring grandchildren nicknamed her “Ding.” In her role as grandma, Joyce let her grandchildren live out and embrace every point of their imagination - from forts, to puppet shows, to building a rollie pollie colony in a fish tank, there was almost nothing she wouldn’t have done for her grandkids.
Her devotion and warmth are attributes her family will never forget, and we are all better for what she brought to our lives.
A private service will be held on Friday, August 16th at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. For those desiring, donations may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation at https://www.parkinson.org/ or the United Network for Organ Sharing at https://unos.org/.
