I had to be about 4 or 5 years old when I spent the night at my Aunt Juanita’s house. I caught this HORRIBLE ear ache and a fever while spending the night, and was in a lot of pain. I remember being intimidated by my aunt because she didn’t play and would tell us like it is. That night I could not take the pain anymore and went to my aunt Juanita’s room crying about my ear. She woke up and gave me medicine. While waiting for the medicine to take effect, the pain got worse and I missed my mom, so anxiety kicked in. I was crying uncontrollably and all I remember was my aunt Juanita carrying me in her arms and rocking me to sleep, calming my anxiety. When waking up in the morning, it felt like a long night was over and a certain peace that everything was going to be okay. My mom picked me and my brothers up first thing that morning and when leaving, I gave my Aunt Juanita a big hug and felt very grateful of getting me through the night. It was a long hug and I remember her smiling/laughing like we both had a long night. From that point on I was still scared of her lol, but knew deep down inside that she loved me and that I loved her back. It was the first of many memories that I will never forget about my Aunt Juanita.

Aunt Juanita: It takes a village to raise a child and my Aunt Juanita played a critical role in my life as a child. There were many life values I learned from my aunt growing up and here are just a few:

-You are going to church with them on Sunday if you spend the night on Saturday.

-You are going to pray for your food
-You are going to eat everything on that plate and not get up until you finish.

-You are going to pick up and clean up after yourself.

-You can get a butt chewing or spanking if you act up.

-You are not going to waste the A/C or heat in the house. So you better decide if you are going to stay inside or stay outside, pick one and shut that door.

Love you Tia!
