Lupe was born on May 23, 1932, in Kerrville, Texas, to Marcus Castilleja and Juanita Juarez. As a child, Lupe and her family moved to Houston, settling first in the historic First Ward before moving to the North Side, the neighborhood she would proudly call home for the rest of her life.
As a teenager, she learned the value of hard work, spending her youth working the fields picking tomatoes in Ohio—a formative time in her life, the stories of which she loved to pass down to her children and grandchildren. Following her youth years and prior to her marriage, she stepped into a vibrant chapter of young adulthood working at the ticket booth at the Historical Ritz Theatre, another favorite time in her life that she fondly shared stories about with her family.
She shared an incredibly close and special bond with her sisters, Lucy and Tina. In their younger years, they loved getting glammed up and heading out for nights of music and dancing at the famous Pan American Night Club.
It was a passion for dancing that carried into the love story of her life when she married her beloved husband, Jose Garcia Sr. Together, they built a beautiful family blessed with six children and spent many enchanted evenings gliding across the dance floor together at the Historical Stardust Ballroom on Fulton.
Lupe was an exceptionally proud mother to her sons who dedicated their lives to law enforcement. She also shared an incredibly close, unbreakable bond with her only daughter, Liz, who was her constant companion and someone she spent most of her time with and leaned on deeply.
She poured her heart into raising her children and later played an instrumental role in caring for her grandchildren. Summers with her were legendary. She made every break from school feel like an adventure, frequently taking her grandchildren on exciting field trips to the old Northline Mall followed by a treated lunch at Piccadilly Cafeteria. She also enjoyed taking her grandkids to the airport, boarding the terminal train, smiling and laughing as the grandkids playfully chased the train down the platform.
Back at home, she brought everyone together with the unmatched comfort of her kitchen, where she could always be found making a massive pot of her signature caldo de arroz con pollo. But her kitchen was just the starting point; her family was her greatest joy, and she was happiest when the gathering moved out to her backyard patio. There, surrounded by those she loved, she spent countless Sunday’s listening to Tejano music, laughing at funny stories, and eating barbecue.
Known for her sharp mind and love for routine, she stayed connected to the world by reading the newspaper daily, watching the news, and never missing her favorite TV novelas. She loved going out to eat seafood at “The Fish Place” with her loved ones, radiated elegance wherever she went, and always looked her very best.
Lupe’s truest confidante was her cherished dog, Molly. As her constant companion, Molly was a fixture at Lupe’s side offering a quiet and fierce loyalty.
We find comfort knowing she’s at peace in heaven's grandstand, still keeping score for her beloved Astros and Texans. The world is a little less bright without her. She will be profoundly missed, but her vibrant spirit lives on in the family she loved so fiercely.
Welcoming her into eternity are her husband, Jose Garcia Sr.; her parents, Marcus Castilleja and Juanita Juarez; her sisters, Lucy Garcia and Tina Jara; her brothers, Juan Castilleja and Lorenzo Castilleja; her daughter, Sylvia Garcia; her son, Richard Garcia; and her grandson, Thomas Garcia.
Her life and love continue through her surviving children, David Garcia and his wife Jenny, Jose Garcia Jr. and his wife Susan, Steven Garcia and his wife Cathy, Gilbert Garcia and his wife Michelle, and her daughter Elizabeth Rodriguez and her husband Ruben. Guadalupe is also survived by her 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of loving extended family members and friends.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jose Garcia Jr., Steven Garcia, Gilbert Garcia, Ruben Rodriguez Jr., Ruben Rodriguez III, and Cameron Garcia.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt and special thanks to the staff at Brookdale The Heights Assisted Living.
Visitation will be held at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039, US, on October 8, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
