

Julia was born in Santa Fé de Bogotá in 1942. She graduated from La Universidad Javeriana in Santa Fé de Bogotá as a Medical Doctor in 1967. She specialized in General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology. During medical school, she met her husband Jaime S. Cuervo. They were married 52 years.
She was a doctor who touched thousands of lives during her years practicing medicine. She always made time to listen to her patients and cared for them as if they were family. She took time out from her work to raise her three boys. She began practicing medicine in Colombia, South America, moved to New York, New York, Charleston, South Carolina, and finally to Houston, Texas.
Julia had a love for new cultures and photography which took her around the world from Russia to the Middle East, Africa and all over Europe and South America. She had a thirst for learning that lasted her entire life. She learned to play the tiple and dance the Sevillana. Her favorite past time was learning new languages including English, French and German. She was a deeply religious woman with a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was active with her university alumni group even traveling to Colombia for various events and meetings.
She loved to laugh, made everyone she talked to feel special, and had a quiet, calming patience no matter the situation. Julia was a woman with an enormous heart, always willing to welcome a stranger as a friend and treat an acquaintance like family. She opened her home to countless people who needed a helping hand, worked to get an education or just wanted to visit.
Julia is preceded in death by her parents Luis Eduardo Vargas Huertas and Maria Alicia Galvis de Vargas. She is survived by her husband Jaime S. Cuervo and sons Luis Jamie [Caria Lee] of Moorhead City, NC, Jose Mauricio [Mary Elizabeth] of Houston, TX, and Carlos Martin [Kimberly Lynn] of Chicago, IL and her grandchildren Nadia Rocio, Juan Carlos, Julian Luis, Aleksandr Martin, Jose Salustiano, and Dayna Marie. She is also mourned by her siblings Carmen Alicia Vargas de Rodriguez y Jesus Ignacio Rodriguez, Clara Inés Vargas, Luisa Elvira Vargas, Maria Cristina Vargas, and Luis Roberto Vargas and her sisters in-law Fernando and Blanca Sandoval, Luz Mery Cuervo, and nieces and nephews Fernando Sandoval, Jamie Alfredo Oviedo Cuervo, Paola Andrea Sandoval Cuervo, Ximena Sula, Jesus Eduardo Rodriguez, Luisa Fernanda Rodriguez, Daniel Francisco Vargas, Luis Andres Vargas, Maria Katharina Vargas and Diana Milena Basto.
