J.V. Carr Jr. of Fulshear, TX, died peacefully at his home on the morning of December 6th, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Frances Carr, and his children, Jared Carr and Julie Benedict, son-in-law Christopher Benedict, and his four sisters, Judy Carr, Sara Carr, Mary Lou Vincent and Jo Andersen.
J. was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1943, to parents J.V. and Mary Lou Carr. He was the oldest brother to his four sisters. Soon after his birth, The Carr family moved to Dallas where he was fortunate enough to live on the same street as his five cousins. He spent his childhood exploring the fields near his house and displayed an early love for being outdoors and hunting, sometimes with weaponry he would fashion for himself.
He developed a deep love of music, and as a teenager would sneak out of the house to visit small clubs in Deep Ellum to listen to his favorite blues musicians. He was a music collector throughout his life, endlessly arranging his recordings to enjoy during his free time.
J. moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1965. While in school, he met Shirley Parkhurst who he wed and spent the next forty years with.
J. entered the Army and completed his basic training in New Jersey. When asked where he wanted to serve, he said, “wherever the Army needs me.” He was stationed in Aberdeen, MD, and Atlanta, GA during his tenure.
After his service, J. and Shirley returned to Dallas where he received his M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University. In 1970, they moved to Houston where he started his career in the banking industry in the credit department at First City Bank. Once J. and Shirley established their lives in Houston, they began their family with the birth of Jared and Julie.
J. worked in the banking industry for 50-years and was still working up until the day before his passing. According to his colleagues at Zions Bank, J. loved a deal, and through his years of experience as a lender and credit approver he was second to none bringing his clients to the table to create the structure that would help them grow their businesses.
J. shared his love of the outdoors with his family. They would spend time at beach houses, first in Galveston and later in Port O’ Connor. The family would go out on their boat exploring the Gulf Coast and in Matagorda Bay, which made a lasting impact upon his children and instilling them with a deep respect and appreciation of nature.
Hunting and fishing was his passion away from work and family. On the weekends that allowed him to, he would fish for redfish and trout, and hunt for duck. On land, he would go to various leases to hunt deer, dove and quail, which he would prepare for dinner for family and friends. He was a skilled outdoorsman and his sense of adventure carried him away to excursions as far away as Alaska and Argentina.
In 2005, Shirley Carr passed away after a long illness, which affected him tremendously.
He happily remarried in 2007 to Frances Pappas, with whom he was married for the past 13 years. Frances and J. enjoyed many wonderful times together, including everything from fishing in Port O’Conner, travel to Switzerland, bird hunting excursions in Georgia, travel to Alaska, and explorations of North and South Carolina. Frances & J. loved to entertain, and his relationships with his many friends and colleagues were very important to him.
To his clients, he was a trusted businessman dedicated to his craft, and he was always ready to mentor colleagues. To Shirley, and to Frances, he was the rock of the household, who partnered with them to provide stability for the family while finding time to travel and enjoy the finest experiences that their sojourns offered. To his children, he was the model of an independent spirit who created the life he envisioned for himself, which carried over into their lives and choices as adults, while providing the support, love, and trust when they needed it.
