Karen Jean Working was born on December 30, 1955 at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, Ohio. She was the daughter of Richard and Margaret Working. Her childhood found her in New Albany, Ohio where she matured into the independent person she eventually became.
Karen grew up with four siblings. She had one older brother, Mark, two younger brothers, Kevin and Bruce, and one younger sister, Sandi. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Margaret, and Richard.
During her grade school years, Karen was a very focused and serious student. Karen graduated from New Albany High School in 1974. Her memorable achievements included 1st chair clarinet in band in her Junior and Senior years. The teacher she enjoyed learning from the most was Mr. Cheeseman.
Karen earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management Information Systems from University of Houston. Her favorite courses were her computer design courses with friend Evelyn Pieprzyrca.
Karen was an Army veteran. She was one of the last women in the Woman Army Corp. before they were merged with the regular Army Corp. Through her hard work and dedication, she achieved the rank of Sergeant within 3 years.
On October 6, 1979, Karen exchanged wedding vows with Darrell Donavan Battles at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church of Houston, Texas. She had two children, daughter Desiree and son DuShawn. She also had four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are Kiara, Jakira, Shaniya, and Sydne. The great-grandchildren are Ayden, Averill and Ashton. They were always aware of how much Karen loved them.
Karen’s primary occupation was training and IT Management. She was employed for 10 years with Baylor Medcare.
Karen's faith was a center point in her life. She was a faithful member of Calvary Houston (Friendswood) for 21 years. Karen was an active member of the 50 Plus Women’s Auxiliary.
Karen loved traveling. Favorite vacations included Ohio, Hawaii, Florida, Mediterranean, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Karen was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of Karen's favorites was Lil Bit and Sarah. They were best friends for 14 years and 7 years.
Karen had many friends over the years. Later in life, she became friends with her caretaker Beatrice Lopez. Her family and friends will miss her. She leaves with all those who knew her many wonderful memories.
A visitation for Karen will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Calvary Houston, 3700 FM 528 Road, Friendswood, TX 77546, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
