On Wednesday, my old comrade woke up early to shovel snow before rushing to Baltimore airport. By the time he landed in Lafayette, it was already dinnertime.

Thursday morning at 9 AM, we hit the road to Houston. Traffic was brutal—so much so that lunch became a distant dream. We barely made it in time for our old drinking buddy’s farewell service. That night, we crashed at a hotel, exhausted.

Friday, my comrade was so drained he slept until 10:30 AM. No time for a slow morning—we jumped back in the car and raced back to Lafayette. That evening, we opened two bottles of red wine to celebrate our old friend’s life. After all, he would’ve insisted.

Saturday, my comrade’s flight back to Baltimore was delayed. His connection went sideways, forcing him to reroute through D.C. By the time he landed, it was past 1 AM. Then, one final stretch—another ride home.

Four days, three nights, a long journey to say goodbye.

Looking back at the road we once traveled with our old friend, the yellow roses of Texas are still in full bloom. Somewhere between the petals, a quiet sigh lingers.

You were an important benefactor in my life. When I was at my lowest point, you helped me without asking for anything in return. You were a loyal and kind-hearted classmate who always looked out for others. I have never forgotten your kindness in the past 42 years.

Ogu,

I was just in touch with you on LINE at the end of October 2024, and I never expected that you would be gone so soon. One morning in November, you accidentally butt-dialed me on LINE. All I could hear was the sound of heavy breathing. I thought something was wrong, so I tried talking to you, but you didn’t respond. I even called Jim Lee to ask if he had your phone number and requested that he check in with you to make sure you were okay. Thankfully, the heavy breathing was just you climbing the stairs.

I want to share the experiences we had together during 1983 and 1984. When I first arrived in Atlanta in March 1983, you picked me up at the airport and even helped me handle my lost luggage. Two days later, you drove me to Auburn to start school. That summer, I visited you in Atlanta, and during that week, we even got into a car accident together. You took care of me while I recovered and then drove me back to Auburn.

In the summer of 1984, I returned to Atlanta to work. Knowing that I was preparing to transfer to New Jersey and needed money, you introduced me to your workplace at the Golden Mountain Restaurant as a busboy. Worried that I wouldn’t earn enough, you even gave up your waiter shifts for me (and let me drive your car to work every day) so that I could work more hours and save up.

During the 12 weeks I spent working in Atlanta, you let me sleep on the floor of your apartment. You introduced me to my first Braves baseball game, where I learned that you had been a lifelong baseball fan. You also showed me the movie Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke on HBO, which gave me a glimpse of your sense of humor. You welcomed me into your social circle of international students. After work, we would go to midnight screenings of Chinese kung fu movies, play mahjong on weekends, and enjoy Korean food together. Your student life in Atlanta was truly colorful and lively!

The Ogu (Turtle) family has always been a humorous and fun-loving bunch. I still remember when we were studying at Tunghai University and took a trip to Changhua to visit Bai Liang and Ogu. When we arrived at Ogu’s house, we asked his family if Ogu was home. His father came out and, with a completely serious face, asked, “Which Ogu are you looking for?”

It turned out that all the kids in their family had the nickname “Ogu” or “Turtle” because their formal names all started with Wu Gui (吳桂), following their generational ranking. So, to keep things simple, their classmates just called them all “Ogu.” And to make things even funnier, his father said, “I was sometimes called Old Turtle myself.” His dad’s sense of humor was truly unmatched—just like Ogu’s.

Ogu brought so much laughter and warmth into our lives. His humor, kindness, and friendship will always be cherished in our hearts. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the memories and joy he shared with everyone around him. Rest in peace, dear Ogu. You will always be remembered with a smile.

I'm really sorry to hear about Frank's passing. I worked with him since 2003 at Weatherford and he was a super-great guy.  I really learned a lot from him and Frank was always very supportive of us and wanted to get everything perfect.  
A funny story Frank shared once was that he had this payroll program that had been working for many years.  Then one day, it just broke and he was trying to figure out what could have happened to cause it to suddenly break.  As he debugged the execution, he found that the CEO had gotten a bonus over $10 million and the extra zero exceeded the # of digits in his variable!  He never expected someone would get paid that much in a single check!  
Another funny story was that Frank was in Dubai training this guy I'll call "Dave" (so nobody gets embarrassed).  Dave was this super hyper guy, yet he would literally have these energy drinks all day on top of being high-strung naturally.  The contrast to see Frank working alongside Dave was just comical.  Then, we are in the taxi going to the airport and Dave is going on this rant about how tired he is and all this work he was doing.  I looked at him and said, "What are you talking about? You were watching Frank the whole time!" He agreed and we all had a good laugh.
Frank was a great co-worker and will be deeply missed.  All my best to his family.

Dear Sifu,

Without you, I never would have graduated from college. Every one of our classmates remembers that.

Back in 2005, while you were preparing for heart surgery, your biggest wish was to see your daughter, Jennifer, graduate from college. Well, guess what? Jennifer not only graduated, but she also landed a great job and married an amazing husband, Kevin. I know you are very, very proud of Kevin and his ability to solve everyday problems—he’s like a real-life superhero around the house!

While you helped me graduate from college, in return, I helped you find the best wife ever—Ting! Ting isn’t just a great wife; she’s a force of nature! She takes care of you like no one else could.

The last time we talked on the phone, on January 25, you told me you felt guilty that Ting works so hard to take care of you. But Ting, being the powerhouse she is, just laughed and yelled, “I am Superwoman—no problem at all!”

Ting, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking care of my Sifu and the whole family. You are a true warrior. And don’t worry—you’re not alone. Sister Lee, our classmates, and I are always here with you.

Well, I don’t have a photo to upload. But your smile is already engraved deeply at the very bottom of my heart. 

It’s a privilege to share our Tunghai University college life together. You didn’t talk much. You were quiet most of the time.  But your kindness, coolness, and your special sense of humor were always there. 

When we regrouped in California last time, almost 40 years after our graduation, I was delighted to find out that you didn’t change much. Still the same level-headed guy, still utters words with wisdom. Still the same guy that I always enjoy to have the company with. 

I hate to see you go.  Really.  Not just me. I know everyone wants to see you around. You always give people around you a peace of mind. I know we will miss you when we have a class reunion next time.  But, on the other hand, you are not really gone. You are still there. Yes, I know, indeed. I can still see you stand there, quietly, and smiling.

In 2017, in Vancouver, Washington, Ogu and I had the wonderful opportunity to receive acupuncture treatment from our friend, Dr. Ming Lee, at Lily Acupuncture. She is truly skilled, and the experience was amazing!

Those joyful moments we shared together in our college years, one after another, appear in my mind.
Though I had happy moments, I was confused about life at that time.
During our junior year, we shared an apartment, you always supported me as I explored unrealistic ideas.

Your support and kindness affected me and many classmates. 
The pain of your absence is a testament to the depth of our friendship.

In Mar. 2023, I visited my son in Houston. Ogu took me to his most favorite Japanese restaurant for lunch. He reminded me to take the best dessert after the meal, i.e., the red bean soup. 
The fun fact: Ogu never missed the red bean soup at the end of the meal.

In Mar. 2022, I visited my son in Houston. I brought ingredients of Cookies while visiting Ogu. Then, Ogu and I made Almond Horn Cookies together at his house. We took few pictures, chatted, and played with the energetic dog while waiting for the oven to finish the baking. Since it was a work day, Ting and Jennifer were not at home to enjoy the fresh-made cookies.  Ogu decided to wait for the family to enjoy the cookies together. Later, Ogu told me that his family enjoyed the cookies very much.
 
Really enjoyed the wonderful time with Ogu together and will cherish all the fond memory forever.

Dear Ogu,

The day before the southern snowstorm, I reached out to you and learned that you weren’t feeling well. You told me that speaking was difficult, yet your voice still carried its familiar strength, and your humor remained intact, just as it always had.

On January 25, Liu-ge called, deeply worried about you, wondering what we could do to lift your spirits. Perhaps I was too optimistic. I reassured him that you had faced a similar challenge last year, underwent the procedure smoothly, and recovered quickly. I truly believed this time would be no different.

Now, I realize that Liu-ge saw more clearly. He understood the gravity of the moment and cared deeply for you in ways I should have, too.

Even in your most difficult hours, when you were in pain and standing at the crossroads of life and death, you still found the strength to laugh and share warmth with your old friends. That unshakable spirit, that kindness, that resilience, it was who you were, and it is what we will forever remember.

Ogu, you have left us, but your laughter, your warmth, and the joy you brought into our lives will never fade. You were a great friend, and it was an honor to have shared this journey with you.

Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will always be with us.

I was so sorry to hear about Frank. I fondly remember him as a smart, gentle man, devoted husband and loving father.
