Larry was born on January 11, 1944, to Dr. Eugene and Mrs. Margaret Kardosh Steinberger in Fort Worth, TX. He graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in 1961, then went on to college at the University of Texas in Austin. During his time at UT, Larry was a member of the Phi Sigma Delta fraternity and the distinguished University of Texas Cowboys Organization. Larry made many lifelong friends and memories during his college years.
After graduating from the University of Texas Dental School, Larry started what proved to be a very successful dental practice in the Houston Galleria area that spanned over forty years. Larry took great pride in his work and cherished the relationships he developed with his patients as well as his wonderful and loyal staff over the years.
In 1987, Larry married Marilyn Kay Alford in Houston. The couple built a beautiful life together raising their children and enjoying time with their five grandchildren; especially when all were gathered in their Sugar Land home.
In his later years as Larry battled numerous health conditions, Marilyn (who Larry always referred to as “the love of his life”) remained by his side and provided much comfort and support.
All who knew Larry loved his infectious personality and his ability to command a presence when he entered a room. He was well known for his charm and, even in his final days, his unique sense of humor and wit. He was also gentle and warm-hearted. This was especially true in how he interacted with his grandchildren and pets that he and Marilyn had over the years. His grandchildren will remember the enthusiastic and warm greeting they received from their Pappy every time they saw him.
Larry had a passion for sports of all kinds. In particular, he loved hunting, fishing and all things outdoors. In his early years he was a gifted baseball player and loved both playing and coaching youth teams. He also was an avid tennis player and talented golfer who enjoyed both activities for years as a member of Lakeside Country Club. Larry also loved watching sports, especially Texas Longhorn football (a loyal fan through and through).
Larry loved music and frequently hit the dance floor, where he liked to show off his two-stepping skills. He and Marilyn loved to dance together, and he would light up when he heard one of his favorite songs being played. Larry was heavily involved in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (parade committee) for over thirty years and he considered the live concerts to be the highlight of the annual rodeo.
Larry was predeceased by his parents Eugene and Margaret Steinberger, his daughter Lindy Megan Steinberger, his brothers-in-law Michael Pactor and Larry Alford, his mother and father-in-law Marian and Robert Atticus Alford.
He is survived by wife Marilyn (Alford) Steinberger, his sister Barbara Pactor and brother Gary (Jacque); son Matt Hill Steinberger (Shiloh); daughters Jody McCrary (Matthew) and Stacy Chiasson (Matty); grandchildren Jaxson and Lincoln Steinberger, Kate and Cooper McCrary and Camp Chiasson; sister-in-law Nancy Alford, brother-in-law Mark Alford (Kathy) and, numerous nieces, nephews, friends, loved ones and his beloved dog Tootsie.
Larry’s family also wishes to acknowledge and thank Derrick Hardy for his devoted and loving care for Larry during his final months. Also heartfelt thanks to Martha Navarro for her thirty plus years of care and friendship.
Services will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079 on Friday, August 11, 2023, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization he volunteered with and felt strongly about.
