Laurence Couch Cartledge, 57, of Houston, Texas died Monday, June 20, 2022 in Houston. Laurence was born on January 11, 1965 in Columbus, Georgia to Judith Anne Couch and John Dudley Cartledge. He lived in Los Angeles for 30 years before moving to Houston two years ago.
Laurence joined DMJM Rottet (AECOM) in 2003 and then helped establish Rottet Studio in 2008. Prior to his interior architecture career, he worked at DDB Needham Advertising, Los Angeles. As an Associate Principal and Design Director for the Los Angeles office of Rottet Studio, Laurence brought more than 20 years of experience working with notable clients from various market sectors around the world, including corporate workplace, hospitality, maritime and residential. A professional interior architectural designer, Laurence’s talents, diversified strengths, and leadership brought clients and teams together through a collaborative and thoughtful design process. Knowing that communication and collaboration are key to any successful project, Laurence focused on creating beautiful, functional spaces that always strove to surpass any clients’ expectations. He loved designing and creating, and seeing his clients enjoy what he created.
Laurence held an undergraduate degree from Auburn University (where he was Aubie the Tiger, the school mascot, from 1986-1987) and a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
He also obtained his Masters of Interior Architecture from UCLA/ Cal Poly.
Outside of the office, Laurence enjoyed snow-skiing in Switzerland, cooking , anything to do with gardening, fishing and the company of friends and family. He played golf, loved the beach, an art collector, and loved his friends, job, and coworkers. Christmas was his favorite holiday. He enjoyed watching SEC football and anything to do with Auburn.
Laurence was preceded in death by his father, John Dudley Cartledge. He is survived by his mother, Judith Couch Fleming, and her husband Robert Fleming Sr.; sister Anne Cartledge; half-sister Lucy Gates; nephews Foster Coleman and Ford Coleman; niece Margaret Anne Coleman; and aunt Becky Couch.

The Laurence C. Cartledge Aubie Endowed Fund for Excellence at Auburn University is designed to support the development, design, and maintenance of Aubie’s facilities and historical markers including the Aubie House, the Aubie Experience, and an Aubie Statue. Laurence spent 20 years as a professional interior architectural designer, so this fund will allow Laurence’ legacy to live on through his greatest passions: Aubie and his profession.
