Dr. Lena Boyd-Brown, age 80, passed away on April 30, 2018 in Houston, Texas, after a brief battle with cancer. She was a resident of Houston for 17 years. Lena is the daughter of the Late Eugene Alcus Boyd, Sr. and the late Rosemary Lewis Boyd. She is preceded in death by one brother, the late Eugene Alcus Boyd, Jr. All of New Orleans, LA. Dr. Brown is survived by a former husband, Milton Alexander Brown of Washington, D.C., a devoted sister, Ann Boyd Brown, Houston, TX; Nephews: Michael Brown (wife Michelle Kinsch Brown) Seattle, WA, Eldwin A. Boyd, Atlanta, GA, and Griffin Brown-Kinsch, Seattle, WA; Nieces: Michelle Brown, Imanni Brown, Dallas, TX, Angela Boyd, New Orleans, LA and Colette Boyd, Atlanta, GA. Lena also leaves many cousins, other relatives & friends.
Dr. Brown attended Paul L. Dunbar Elementary, St. Mary’s Academy, Xavier University (B.A.), Howard University (M.A.), and Rutgers University (Ed.D).
Dr. Brown and family were members of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in New Orleans, LA. Lena’s leisure time was spent listening to jazz music, reading books, and writing editorials on issues connected to black communities.
Dr. Brown’s teaching experiences were Eastern High School, Washington, D.C., Southern University at New Orleans and Baton Rouge, LA, Grambling State University, LA, Tuskegee University, AL, Dillard University, New Orleans, LA, and Hampton University, VA. She retired from Prairie View A&M, in Houston, TX in 1999.
Dr. Brown received awards for consultations and participation with the Department of Education and Department of Defense. She also served on many advisory boards from 1976-2001.
Professionally, she was affiliated with the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, Association of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Southern Conference of African American Studies, History of Education Society, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Alpha Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Interment at Providence Memorial Park, New Orleans, LA.
