Loan was born on October 28, 1968 in Saigon, Vietnam to Ty Van Pham and Nhu Thi Le. Loan graduated from Westfield Washington High School in Westfield, Indiana in 1987. Post high school, she attended Purdue University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (1992) and a Master of Science in Statistics (1994). She later achieved a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Rutgers University in 2000. It was during her “Boilermaker” days where she met the love of her life and future husband, Tinh Pham whom she married in 1997.
Loan had enjoyed a very successful career working for corporations such as Sikorsky, Lockheed Marn and Bell Labs. She had gained a reputation as an accomplished author and coauthor of numerous publications on aviation safety and a well-respected associate technical fellow in her field. Her expertise also positioned her as a sought-after educator, delivering tutorials on quantitative risk assessments at various conferences and symposia.
She served as an expert in aviation safety risk assessments, actively participating in conference technical committees and contributing to the editorial boards of several esteemed international journals. Moreover, she generously dedicated her time as a judge for high school competitions centered on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Throughout her career, Loan was honored with multiple awards, including the CHC Safety Quality Summit Award in 2013.
In 2022, she received the Professional Achievement Award from the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE). Further recognition awaited her in 2023, as she was slated to receive the Scientific Achievement Award "For Significant Contributions to the Advancement of System Safety through Novel Research and Development Methods." The award was to be presented posthumously at the Annual International System Safety Summit on August 28, 2023, in Portland, OR, by the International System Safety Society.
Loan was so much more than her storied career and academic achievements. Even though she achieved much success, she remained a humble and giving person. She was often described as warm, caring, generous, and loyal and extremely family oriented. Loan also never met a fashion label or a box of chocolates she didn’t love! We will fondly remember her love of travel, flowers, photographs, family events, macarons, holiday fruitcakes and New York fashion.
Loan is survived by her parents Ty and Nhu Pham of Westfield, Indiana; her beloved husband Tinh Pham of Shelton, Connecticut; her brother Son Pham (Eve) of Fishers, Indiana; her sister Thuy Pham (Andrew Violette) of Nashville, Tennessee; her sister Ngoc Wozniak (Randall) of San Francisco, California; her sister Hanh Lalas (Louis) of Temecula, California; nieces and nephews Ethan Violette, Audrey Pham Evans (Connor), Nolan Pham, Olivia Violete, Victoria Pham, Tiffany Pham and Mia Lalas; several extended family members and close friends.
