Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Clara Anderson, her sisters, Eva Lynn Reed and Arlene Miles, and her husband, Wilfred Thomas Doherty, Sr. She is survived by her brother Glenn Anderson, her son, Wilfred Thomas Doherty, Jr., her daughter, Deborah Doherty Salguero, her son-in-law, Diego Salguero and her granddaughter, Morgan Salguero. Lois was born on May 11, 1927 in Monmouth, Illinois. Her family came to Texas when she was a small child and settled in the Swedish community of Olivia, where she spent the majority of her childhood. When Lois was a teenager, her family moved to Baytown, Texas. While living in Baytown, she attended Robert E. Lee High School, where she was a member of the Junior Classical League, and graduated from there in 1945. She also attended Lee Junior College and Sul Ross University.
Throughout her life, Lois never did anything halfway. Everything she did was done to the fullest, and with intense passion, conviction and diligence. “You name it – Lois can do it!” That’s what her sorority sisters from Beta Sigma Phi would say about her. She remained active in her sorority for many years after college, holding numerous positions including President, and was named Sorority Girl of the Year in 1954. This same dedication was always present throughout her life, career and many other varied interests. During the 1960s, Lois was a sports car enthusiast and was among the original organizers of the Tejas Triumph Sports Car Club. She loved driving her Triumph TR-3 and participated in numerous sports car rallies, gymkhanas and hill climbs, earning more trophies that she could even display. When she wasn’t bringing home trophies, she was organizing sports car events and serving in several positions in the sports car club that she helped to create. And, on top of this, she had a successful career as a secretary in the oil and gas industry. Other interests throughout her life included playing the piano and organ, sewing, bowling, stained glass and playing cards. But, Lois would not have been Lois without taking her level of participation in each of these beyond just mere hobby. She didn’t just learn how to play the piano and organ, but auditioned for and was accepted into the National Society of Student Organists. She didn’t just learn how to sew her own clothes, but would design them as well. She didn’t just enjoy bowling, but taught others so that they could enjoy the sport as well. She didn’t just learn how to do stained glass, but also taught classes in her home. And, of course, she didn’t play cards once in a while just to pass the time. She would play fierce games of Skip Bo with her sister, Eva Lynn, and their friends into the wee hours of the night! In 1966, Lois married her true love, Wilfred Thomas Doherty, Sr. From this union, she had two children, Wilfred Thomas Doherty, Jr. in 1966 and Deborah Ann Doherty (now Salguero) in 1969. After losing her husband in 1972, she dedicated her life to raising her two children on her own. It was also in the early 1970s that Lois began her special relationship with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church that would continue to hold a special place in her heart for the rest of her life. She served as an Elder for the church and on numerous committees, approaching every project with the meticulous attention to detail for which she was so well known. And she also shared her passion for stained glass with St. Andrew’s by designing, creating and organizing the construction of the stained glass windows representing the Twelve Apostles throughout the church, as well as the stained glass window in the Chapel. But it was in the year 2004 that the light of Lois’s life was born: her granddaughter, Morgan. There are no words to describe the joy on Lois’s face whenever she would look at Morgan. When Lois moved in with Morgan and her family in 2005 when Morgan was just nine months old, it was the beginning of a special bond between Grandmother and Granddaughter that will live on in Morgan’s heart forever. In fact, they became so close that Morgan’s parents didn’t stand a chance against the two of them! They would even plot and conspire together against Morgan’s parents in planning all kinds of mischief! Because of this amazing and special bond, Morgan understands and appreciates the privilege of getting to spend almost every day of the first five years of her life with such an amazing woman as her Grandmother.
