Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Lula Marie Bell, passed away on February 19, 2022, at her home in Houston. Lula was surrounded by her loving family when she passed.
Lula was born to James and Elmira St. Andre on August 1, 1936, in Manchester, Louisiana. Lula was the third eldest child of nine siblings: Thelma, Lessie, Betty, Jesse, Fred, Susie, Ruby, and Margaret.
Lula married her first husband, Alvin Fontenot, on March 3, 1953, and gave birth to their son Terry in 1960. Lula lost her husband and moved with her son from Raywood, Texas to Orange County, California, before settling in Houston for the remainder of her life. Lula met her husband, Larry Bell, and was married on June 27, 1970, and gave birth to their son Keith in 1972.
In addition to being a loving wife and mother, she was also a dedicated and loving grandmother to Terry Jr., Jamie, and Parker and great-grandmother to Lyla. She was a devoted caregiver to the sick, especially to her parents and in-laws (Anner and Nelson). She extended her love to anyone that needed it and welcomed everyone with open arms into her life and home. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, and cooking for her family and friends. She was dedicated to her role as a eucharistic minister. She lovingly and faithfully brought communion to hospital patients, those in the nursing home, and the homebound. If you stopped by her home during any holiday, you could expect to find yourself surrounded by lemon pies, coconut cakes, sugar popcorn, and a complete meal that was made with love in what seemed like a matter of minutes. She took great pride in baking Christmas cookies, especially her gingerbread cookies that became legendary.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elmira, her husband, Alvin, and her siblings, Thelma, Jessie, and Margaret. She is survived by her husband Larry, her sons Terry (Judy), Keith (Bethany), grandchildren, Terry Jr. (Kelley), Jamie, and Parker, great-granddaughter, Lyla, and her siblings Lessie, Betty, Fred, Susie, and Ruby.
Lula touched many lives and will be greatly missed. She was a person that loved everyone unconditionally and was a true example of how to be strong in your faith, to face life with courage, and believe in yourself without question. Her legacy will live on in the values and lessons that she taught us all.
