Luz Delia Ortiz nació el 29 de Abril de 1930 y falleció el 25 de Octubre de 2019 a la edad de 89 años. Nació en Punta Santiago, Humacao, Puerto Rico. Delia se graduó de la Escuela Superior de Humaco. A ella le fascinaba aprender y obtuvo tres maestrías, la última en teología a la edad de 71 años. A Delia fue maestra de baile y le fascinaba el tango. Delia se caso en 1953 y se divorció en 1956. Ella tuvo un solo hijo, Rodney Acevedo a quien se dedicó en cuerpo y alma. Delia regocijaba ir a la iglesia católica y disfrutaba mucho con las amistades que hizo en la iglesia Holly Family. Ella activamente participaba en actividades caritativas especialmente las relacionadas con la gente pobre y necesitada. Ella tuvo un impacto positivo en todos aquellos que la rodeaban pues “hacia el bien sin mirar a quien." A ella le fascinaba hacer bromas y impartía su sonrisa enorme y brillante que iluminaba a todo a su alrededor. Delia tuvo una vida plena, llena de logros, pero sobre todo fue un gran ser humano. Delia fue una madre maravillosa, una abuela extraordinaria, una hermana increíble y una amiga leal. Todos la extrañaremos mucho.

Biography

Luz Delia Ortiz was born in Punta Santiago, Humacao, Puerto Rico on April 29, 1930. She loved school and self-taught English. In 1951, she took the Federal Employment test and achieved the higher score. She was invited to work with the US Federal Government and at age 22 she moved to Washington DC.
Delia married in 1953 and had her only son Rodney Acevedo in 1955. She divorced in 1956 and devoted her life to Rodney. Delia dedicated herself to her family, education, church, charities and helping others. She earned three master’s degrees. A Master in Education from the University of Puerto Rico, a Master in Public Administration from the University of New York State and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX at age 71. Delia led the Civil Federal Employee’s Union. She was a dance teacher who loved “Tango." Delia was a very accomplished woman who lived a full life and earned multiple achievement awards. Delia moved back to Puerto Rico in 1958 and continued working as a civilian for the US Federal Government in the Roosevelt Road Military Base. In 1984 she retired after 33 years of service. Delia moved to Houston in 1985 In 1986 she started working for the State of Texas and retired after 10 years of service. She then worked for the Catholic Dioceses of Galveston from 1996 to 2003. Delia’s positive outlook in life and commitment to help others made a big impact on her community and on those that surrounded her.
