A man devoted to Christ, M. Floyd Swinger, Jr., 71, departed this earthly life in exchange for his heavenly home on February 14, 2012, after a lengthy and valiant struggle with pneumonia. A resident of Burton, Texas, Floyd formerly resided in Houston, Texas; Lafayette, Louisiana; and Dexter, Missouri. He was born on August 8, 1940, in Gary, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxwell and Wilma Swinger, and grandchildren, Sophia and Parker.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; daughter, Pamela Kirsch and her husband, Terry, of Crowley, Louisiana, and their children, Clay, Collin, Carson and Anna Claire; daughter, Jennifer Joseph, and her husband, Jeffrey, of Lafayette, Louisiana, and his children, Jeffrey, Lizzie and Katie; step-daughter, Kristi Hvidbjerg, and her husband, Søren, of Burton, Texas, and their daughter, Samantha; step-son, Jeff Kitterman, and his wife, Genevieve, of Houston. He will be deeply missed by many other family members, friends, and co-workers.
After serving in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne from 1959 to 1962, Floyd joined the National Guard/ Army Reserves. He became a member of the Special Forces and attended Officer Candidate School, graduating with honors. He retired from the National Guard in 1985 having attained the rank of Major. Floyd graduated from Louisiana State University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Finance, and was an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After several years in the banking industry, he became an oil and gas landman in both Louisiana and Texas.
An avid LSU fan, he rarely missed a moment to cheer on “his” Tigers. One of his favorite roles was that of “Grandpa”, spending many happy moments with each of his grandchildren, sharing his zest for life and his unconditional love.
Through his actions, Floyd taught his family many life lessons--none more important to him than how to love and treat all people--a philosophy that served him well throughout his entire life.
His fatherly advice, deep hearty laughs, sincere hugs, and sense of humor will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to call Floyd husband, dad, grandpa, and friend.
